I was out on the bike a few days ago & ended up at my mums. I switched the engine off & noticed a very faint ticking noise coming from under the fuel tank area - maybe two every second. When I went out to start it about 90mins later, the bike wouldn't start as the battery was dead. Anyone any idea what could be the problem to cause the battery to flatten?
See what these guys suggest mate. If it is something simple I can drop by and help, with my Haynes manual. Is it turning over or just clicking when you push the start button ?
Is it an ABS model? If so I think you need your ECU flashed with new firmware as I believe the ABS system can still be running even though there is no key in the ignition.
Just checked his welcome thread with an upside down pic, and it looks like it has the ABS sticker on it.
If it is that could it be bump started to be rode to a dealership ? Would they charge for that to be done ? (Likely Victors as thats his nearest Honda dealership).
Not sure mate. Is their any warranty left on the bike. Knowing Victors he'd probably try and charge him lol Give them a ring Bump starting should be ok though
I am asking as Mick isn't usually on very often. Not that I have met him yet, but he isn't too far from where I stay when he is at home. Will maybe check with Craig at Victors. Any other things it could be just in case ? Oh hey, this is my 1000th post.
There's no fee for this is there lads? lol Raster, your are indeed correct - it's an ABS model. And I don't think I've any warranty left with Victor Devine either. I've got AA road cover that I'll keep in the bag incase I need to get it over to the garage. If it's a firmware update for the ABS, why has it just did this as I've had the bike for a year already? Or is it a case of it packs it in when it feels like it - hence the update? Cheers for all the help so far everyone.
Sounds as tho it may be a relay switching making the noise?? Possibly a faulty connection drawing power on/off on/off hence dead battery? just a guess like
Off the top of my head the problem normally happens when you use the brakes when wheeling the bike around. Have a google as there is lots of info out there, and on here. Personally I would give Honda a ring as even though it is out of warranty it still needs to be fit for purpose.
His bike is in the garage now. Got it jump started and rode it there. Early indications is that it is NOT the ABS, but may be alternator or loose connection to same.
You're a lot sharper at keeping this thread updated than I am Ratser Just waiting on Davie's diagnosis. Cheers everyone so far....
It turns out it's battery that was nackered. By all accounts, it doesn't do your battery any good leaving the bike for weeks on end not getting used as the HISS is running, causing the battery to drain. In addition, batteries like to be topped up a lot so long periods of not being charged, reduce the life of the battery until it no longer takes a charge from the alternator. News to me. But, hopefully someone else sees this and avoids what happened to me. So to avoid this, I'm going to get a wee charger that trickle feeds the battery - one that plugs in to a wee connection when the bike's not being used. Any suggestions of something of good quality for me? Serious thanks to everyone that helped me.
Optimate 4 mate. Also repairs batteries as well. I have mine plugged in over the winter or if I haven't started it in a couple of weeks. Have the quick connection under the rear seat to save any unscrewing of the main seat too. Well worth it.
Cheers pal - I'll have a look at one of those. And Davie is servicing the bike plus replacing the battery for £195. Many thanks for looking after the bike for me too....
No worries mate. K is picking it up either today or tomorrow morning. Garage has been cleared for it to be kept safe. 2 blades and one 600RR, all black. Photo opportunity there. Just as well the sign in the garage says "Honda Parking Only"
Can't thanks you enough. I mentioned the photo opportunity by text before I read it on here. Have you not got a beemer? lol
