Anyone know of a way to test if discs are straight? I have the opertunity to swap my rr5 ones for bigger rr6 ones but just want to make sure they are all good before I swap them out? Anything else to look for? Cheers Martin
Martin, how are you mate? If you put your bike on the front paddock stand and spin your front wheel while holding something close to the disc ie. screwdriver, you'll be able to tell if it's out of true or not. Might be better with a mate spinning the wheel as you'll need to keep a steady hand while you touch the disc with the screwdriver. Hold it a couple of mil away at first and carefully move it closer. If the disc is true the screwdriver will touch the disc all the time as you rotate it. You'll easily be able to see if it's warped or not. Also if you're fitting 320mm discs from the rr6 you'll need an adapting kit, I got mine from Demon Tweeks at around 30 quid.
Cheers Steve, the plan was to meet the bloke and just swap discs so was hoping for a way to test just the unfitted discs. The bloke basically bought a set off wets and realised the discs were too big and wanted a spacer kit but was worried about the extra time messing with spacers etc on changes so I offered the swap Obviously don't want to end up with warped ones and out of pocket so was hoping for a quick way to check
For unfitted discs place them on a flat table and check the gap all the way around with a piece of paper. I inspected a set of warped discs for an NC30 this way and the warping was obvious, the new discs sat lovely and flush on the table.
Would never purchase second hand discs or swap for that matter ,it's how do u value yourself over a few bob ,certain places you don't cut corners Martin and this is one of them ,you wound dive in a pool without checking the depth first
I agree, this is one area you don't want to cut corners. I purchased a 2nd hand bike from Wales and rode it all the way back to North Devon with the discs warped. I didn't know at the time they were warped, my only indication was when i braked, it felt like an ABS system was kicking in. The previous owner had cut corners by replacing the pads, but not the discs.
Yes you can, I do it too. However there comes a time when you need to replace both....That's the point I was trying to make. Also the tale-tale sign of warped discs feeling like an ABS system when braking.
