    Hi Everyone,

Someone very thoughtfully tried to steal my 09 blade from outside my house a couple of weeks ago. In the process they have broken the steering lock. I have asked at Honda, what needs to be done and the bill comes to a few pence short of a grand!! £1000 ouch. So, not being an oil baron with money to burn, I have decided to hit up eBay and try to source the parts myself.

So far I have a new top yolk, the next thing I need is a key/lock set.

Currently my ignition barrel is cable tied in place, the key turns fine and the bike starts no problem. I just wondered if there was a way of getting a new lock set second hand from and American bike as I know they have a difference with their HISS system.

I though it would pan out like this:

    Get parts
    Install parts
New key does not start bike due to ECU not recognising new key
Take bike to Honda for the key to be programmed to the ECU
Drive away having saved around £600

Does this sound accurate or have I got it all wrong?

    Thanks for your help

Pretty much spot on, although I would have thought that you would be able to refit your existing lock barrel in the new housing, saving you from changing all the locks and reprogramming a new key.

BTW, Wasn't someone on here breaking a 2012 model, if they are the same HISS assembly?

I mentioned rehousing the barrel to one of the staff at a Honda dealer and as you would expect they were reluctant to give any information away. They just said well it may be possible but it would be extremely difficult. I just don't want to get a lock set of eBay and find its no use to me and I need to go and buy another one from Honda. I have looked around quite a bit for information on this and I thought that a lot of people would of had to do this sort of thing as theft is so common in the UK. Turns out that if people do have this problem they don't seem to document very well.

I hope if I can sort my bike out ill get a video put together to put on YouTube.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

While it's winter, if your bike's off the road at some point it may be worth taking your old lock apart to see how you get on. At least that way you can work out if buying a second hand replacement is the way forward.

This happened to me mate. Bastard twats. I had the same bill but saved £200 by keeping the old key for the fuel tank and seat unit and clipped the corner so I don't confuse the two it's arse ache but not difficult, I have separates for the Karmann and most old motors do so it's not the end of the world. The only other downside ( possibly other than re-sale value ) is it took ages to get the split kit from Honda. Unfortunately. the end of the ignition barrel and steering lock snaps very easily, I don't use the steering lock any more just always put two disc locks on, as I had one rotor cut off the other time she got nicked. As stated in my post on this - Tracker got her back and got the scumbags nicked. Still waiting to go to court a year and a month later. Hope this helps, mate. GaryS

If you get an american lock you loose the HISS and you will need to get your ECU and loom changed. That will set you back around £175.

Thanks for all your help guys

Julian, having had 3 bikes stolen previously the insurance company isn't my best friend. My excess is pretty much the same as the cost of fixing it so no it's not an option in this case.

Brg1000, that's what I thought. I do feel better off having the security of the HISS so I think I'll have to get it done in the shop.

GaryS, yea trackers are great I got my triumph speed triple back because it had a tracker. Luckily the blade didnt even get past the frot gate.

    Cheers guys.

Yes I remember, since then I've had problems with the brakes being inconsistent got a massive service done and they had to sort the brakes out for a second time but they still aren't a 100%.

As for the ignition, I just need to wait until after Christmas to get some money together to sort it out. Things like this make me just want to changes bikes all together or maybe just skip country's on the bike and set up a new life somewhere in the mountains haha.

Hope things are going well for you mate.

Aw man that's a bummer about your brakes.

If you need a hand I can help you out with the brakes and help out if you need an ABS bleed - done properly!

Talk to Mark / Yorkshire Gooner - it I think it may well be cheaper to replace the entire ECU and lockset than the things your propose.

I know what I paid Mark for one but not fair to quote in public as his prices may have changed since then.

If you go the US ECU route your insurance would not be valid for theft as they know the bike has HISS which makes it impossible to start (well almost) without a coded key.
