Just been told that my 04RR front discs are needing replacement. I've been out and looked and they are a fraction over 4mm, this was using a tape measure not a specifically accurate calipers or digital measuring device so it's an approximate measurement. The bike pulls up straight and true though so I don't think they need replacing imminently, maybe in the first few weeks of spring. So the question is what does everybody use? OEM discs are about £300 a pair so I won't be getting them and checking eBay there seems to be loads of makes and models. So what do you guys/girls recommend? And out of curiously whats a disc measurement when it's new? Bikes done 25k now and on the originals.
Still got my original discs on my 05 trackbike with 42,000 miles on it. Would think yours should still be ok mate.
Wow really? Maybe they're pulling a fast one then. I must admit on not heavy on the brakes at all and owned the bike since it had 8k on it girl the past four years.
My 06 blade has over 42,000 miles on the clock, used on both road and track and is still on original discs.
I will! I'll get them measured using those modern new fangled vernier digital calipers thingys. I actually went to trade the bike in today for something else but got given a riduculously low offer stating the discs need replacing blah blah and it's going to cost them x amount of money. Funny thing was yesterday while looking at another bike I was offered £800.00 more at another dealership.
I,m pretty sure the min thickness is stamped on the centre boss and should read " MIN TH 3.5 " ......can't say I,ve ever replaced Blade discs because of wear below min thickness , plenty because of warpage on account they,re made from the finist Japanese butter lol
Just for your info Honda reduced the thickness in 2006 from 5mm to 4.5mm, the reason was to loose some mass as the new disc was up to 320mm, the min thickness of the 04/05 disc is 4mm, if they are anything over 4mm or even on 4mm and are nice and flat with no ripples then I would ignor the comment! They could remain at that for some time with road use, pad choice is one of the main reason for essesive disc ware, EBC a pads are well know to eat up discs at a greater rate than many others. As said its a nasty game to play picking holes in something just to get a better deal. Id go somewhere else.
Thanks Arthur. Yes it's stamped min thickness 4mm on the disc and measuring using my crude method they're about that. I will get them measured digitally though for a more accurate reading. The bike pulls up fine with no wobble or pulsing through the lever so they're not warped at all, they do have an amount of very very light scoring/rippling but looking at other bikes it's no worse than them. I think the bloke was taking the proverbial low balling me like that, I would have done a deal today on the bike if the offer had been the same as the other dealership yesterday. Just realised I do have EBC pads fitted on the front about a year ago eek.
Id not panic about the pads mate, millions of people use them, I've run them myself and personally have not seen any accelerated disc ware, but that's the way the majority see it. Like you say just picking holes in it, I can do that with a brand new one
I stand corrected......yes indeed the book of words clearly states 4mm , however in my defence my discs have 3.5 stamped into them ? ..........I now know they,re pattern part discs ".............
That's prob why mine are aftermarket. I did have a set of Goldfern fully floaters on but they were noisey as hell at low speeds and over bumps
I've just ordered a digital vernier caliper from Amazon, only £6.70 delivered. I'll measure them when it arrives and report back. If they're above 4mm I'm going to go back to the dealership and question the salesmans motives.
I've just received my gauge and measured both front discs, they both measure 5.22mm using the digital gauge. What width are they new? The bloody salesman was taking the p@ss. I'm going back to have a word with him.
Sold my RR4 still with original discs with 70+k on the clock. Admittedly used Galfer and other after market discs eventually going back to the originals . Have a set of wavy discs if you're interested
