Hi all. I need as much help as possible. Here goes. I bought a 2007 Repsol, which on the face of it looks beautiful. I bought this from a Polish guy and it's on Polish plates. I've just received the Certificate of Conformity from Honda UK, so at some point I can register with DVLA. Headlight changed for a brand new UK headlight, and clocks to MPH.
Here's the problem. The bike is making a real top end rattle and is smoking when the engine is running. Not sure if the piston rings have gone as well as the cam chain rattle?
To be fair the bike is in fantastic condition but the engine just isn't sounding healthy and I'm not sure what the best course of action is? If I put an engine in what should I pay? Do I need anything else or just the basic engine block?
Any help would be much appreciated?

P.S. Should I cut my losses and break the bike?

I would get it checked out and see how bad it is first as could be a quick fix

    Cheers Martin.
I don't want to break the bike as it's not accident damaged or anything like that and only done 14000 miles and I have loads of paperwork with the bike but I don't want to keep throwing money at the bike as it owes me nearly £3500 already. I expect I could get more money back if I broke it though? Damn shame if I did though

As Martin said, get the engine checked out first, it could be something that could be fixed.

Worst Case...... If the bike really is mint, then I'd be looking for a replacement engine to drop in.

I looked into breaking a bike recent bike recently and it seems as if you a a few items that will go fast like wheels, panels and engines (obv that's one part that won't fetch big for you) and some other parts but a fair bit will sit around for ages!

As Martin says if you break the bike you'll have parts that will sell quickly but other parts will be hanging around forever. A secondhand motor i'm guessing would be £500-£800 plus the fitting which is a lot of work, not so bad if you do it yourself but if you have to pay someone to do it more £££££. A rock and a hard place springs to mind.

    Cheers Guys.
The rattle is probably the can chain tensioner. It's top right of the engine, but it's the smoking that worries me. I'm gutted as I love the bike.

the timing may not be right on the cam if the tensioner is not tight.. that could possibly be causing the smoke.. worth a try.

I bought the complete engine for my swap for £375, took a risk as never heard it running but paid off in the end

Give it someone who knows about these things and stop guessing.

Look on the bright side dude, at £3500 for an 07 its cheap and if you have to spend a bit to get it right then it is what it is !
Like whats already been said, get it checked out. Sometimes the cam chain tensioner can go on these, but the smoke doesn't sound good ! Don't loose faith tho mate, you'll be able to pick up a second hand lump reasonably enough if it comes to it and you'll still have change from what you could have paid for the bike originally !
I'll have your old engine if you want to dump it ;)

06/7 tend to rattle a fair bit on starting which normally gets better the hotter it gets up to normal running temp so have you compared it with another ?
And is the smoke just because it's cold ? ! have you given it a run up the road ? Is the oil level too high ? Is it running on UK petrol ?
