Hi Guys, I am going to change the rear sprocket on my RR4 to a 42 tooth (stock is 40) as I find the bike quite tame stock and heard this is a very good mod! Now the bit that confuses me as most say go -1 +2 which I understand but i'm not interested in a wheelie machine as such. Now Mr Honda decided on the 2006+ model to put a 42 tooth sprocket as standard but this bike is near identical? But if you went +2 up on the 06 it would be the same as +4 on my rr4? So to make the rr6 better +2 = +4 on mine So my question is is it worth going slightly higher on mine say +3 instead or has anybody done the +2 and can tell me if it makes a big difference? First thing to understand is if using a gear calculator it shows -1 on the front is equivalent to + 2.8 on the rear. Personally you'd be better off going -1 and +1 on the rear if you really want to get the equivalent of +4 on the rear. Also if you go +4 it means that the wheelbase would be that much shorter and maybe even alter the geometry unless you swap the chain for a longer one. Maybe Honda also went with a longer chain. I saw an R1 that my mate had bought where the swing arm was almost ground through as the previous owner had brought the wheel too far forward. Now you have to be a tool and a complete numpty to cause that much damage without noticing!
On my 600rr I went one down on front 3 or 4 up n rear. Will throw your speedo out so might be worth getting a speedo healer. Best mod I'd did for the price
I went 1 down on the front and 4 up on rear on my rr4 when I checked the speedo on my bike the bike speedo was saying 74 mph but my satnav was saying 60 mph so got a speed healer and that sorted it and I love the combination
Honda could well have changed the primary drive ratio slightly to compensate for the +2 to allow for a different wheelbase (or similar depending on howe they went).so my point is,just because it looks different,it could well be the same,just in a different way or to be able to change 1 thing without effecting something else. either that or they though,lets stick 2 more teeth on the rear to try to make it as fast as a kwak or BMW.....
and without going through the the 2 w/shop manuals I couldn't tell you off hand,but i'll have a look tonight,unless Arthur peeks his head in and has a look,pretty sure he'd know off top of his head
I think you,ll find that the 06/7 performance figures are different, Mr Honda tweaked the engine mid range as well as a lot of other bits . However.......I have on my 06 changed the rear cog, going up 2 teeth......yes there was some improvement , I then went back to standard at the rear and then went 1 tooth down on the front.......defo a good mod.....however having done that there is now a bit of chain noise, i,m thinking it's due to the front sprocket being slightly smaller the chain now rubs the chain plastic guide and the chain now has to go through a much tighter route
theres usually a rubber damper on the o/e sprocket aswell,which will also make a difference (noise wise) if your new one doesn't
Mines an RR4 and I've out a 42 tooth rear, standard 16 front. Rear tyres been changed to a 55 profile so the speedo is pretty standard. It does make a big difference, you can feel a lot more punch.

Sorry on Nights so not seen the replies until now. @ scooby Yeah I have heard too that the front sprocket has some kind of damper which is why I was more inclined to change the back out when I fit my new tyres. Think I will fit a +2 renthal on the rear and hopefully should give me a bit more grin factor..
Thanks for the input mate. So a 55 profile has helped you out you think? Have you tested the speed to see how much it is out? This is interesting as I'm about to buy some new rubber.
I rode with a friend on his speed triple at 50, 70 and 90 mph and he marked the speed and I was level with him on each. The 55 profile improves grip on the lean.
