Uprated bulbs is 80W too much

Just bought them but could they damage the housing or the lens?

They might just blow the fuse

I put these in my 600rr and the black plug that goes onto the bulb started to melt slightly, i had it changed and put standard wattage ones back in.

Hi, changed to same wattage headlamp bulbs on my Yamaha a few years back, brilliant headlight but melted fuse box

 

I got some Chinese 100watt bulbs that are very bright white and had them on the bike for 2 years now. This thread prompted me to check I wasn't melting fuse boxes or bulb connectors. No damage at all so I thougt I would check how much current they draw. No surprise really just above 4 amps exactly the same as stock 55watt bulbs. So much for 100watts — perhaps they meant 100w per pair.

 

Been using Philips Xtreme Vision bulbs for several years now and most impressed with the amount of light they put down on the road when riding at night.

 

A 55w load fed by a 12v supply will draw around 4.5amps
A 100w load will draw 8.3amps

This is obviously over the individual feeds to each headlight outlet.
Both these will be fed from a relay which will be fed by one feed from the Batt so this will now be drawing nigh on 17amps

 

Osram do 65w H7 bulbs for off road use. The reviews I've read so far really rate them but would they burn out the loom, relay or fuses?

 

I ran 100w bulb on my 600f for a year and no problem so i dont think i will fit them and check on it regularly

 

YEs you can cause damage if not premature aging of the reflectors and the plastic lens as much more heat is generated. In the days of glass lens and larger size reflectors, this was less of a problem.
If you want more light, use phillips 100% extra bulbs (Orsam also do an similar one). They are rated the same as standard but have much higher light output due mostly to different filament desgn.
ALternatively go for HID (not legal) or like I am, wait for LED lights to become available

 

Returned the 80w and bought the Phillips 55w with 50% brighter white light £39 ! Will take pictures when fitted old vs new .

 

Wise move.
