Just a quick question to those who have taken their bike for an MOT and stayed whilst it was done, i have a CB1000r which of course has a single sided swingarm., I was at a garage today with a guy who had a bike with no centre stand so the mot guy simply put a couple of car jacks underneath .... not sure where !!! And jacked it up so he could test the bearings etc on both wheels..... The bike was not a CB but i am guessing he would have done the same with my bike , not too keen on two rusty trolly jacks (no rubber pads etc just metal) being placed god knows where under my bike, have any of you guys stayed around when the mot is taking place and how do they do it. NB I have no paddock stand mounts at the back as i have an Abba stand.
Any mot tech I have seen or helped doing bike mot's tend to opt for using a helper and the side stand to balance the bike while testing either front or rear bearings. Seen and used this technique before for lubricating rear chain while on the road too.
I stay with the mot guy while he does his stuff, for bearing checks I just hold the bike over on it's side stand and one wheel
When I take my bikes for mot they just lift it on side stand. I'm betting they jack it up on the cat/exhaust on your cb1000r
Yep same here. Pugh just says grab hold pull it over has a quick wiggle and back down. Your concerns are valid though if he's a one man band and you're dropping the bike off and leaving it? Perhaps have a word with him and see if he'll check them while your about? It does take literally a few seconds to do.
Same here, crank it over on the side stand. Did go to a garage once where they used a Abba stand. In over thirty years of biking i've never left the bike and returned later always been there and watched/assisted. When we lived in Mid Wales many years ago i took the CBX 1000 for MOT to the local MOT station, walked in and asked any chance of a test today the young lad about 18 says yeah no problem, strolls outside saw the bike and almost wet himself. We put it on it's centre stand and i did the MOT while he watched and ticked the boxes, good old days.
I will be staying with the mot guy, i have also just bought some r and g rear swingarm sliders, they will protect the rear wheel etc and will provide a place for the garages rear paddock stand, having a single sided swingarm is nice but it can be an issue at mot time when all the paddock stands are meant for twin sided swingarms.
I've just bought swingarm spindle bobbins from R&G for similar reasons on the Wife's speed triple... allows the use of my rear standard rather than buying a seperate single sided unit.
I figure the small expense is worth it given i can not expect your average mot guy to have a single sided swingarm paddock stand lying about, so the bobbins will make it easier for them to use their ususal paddock stands.
