Hope somebody can help, I need to change the oil in the blade I've just bought. It has been stood for approx. 18 months and I'm unsure whether to start it, let it run for 5 mins, then drain - or just drain without starting it?

    Any thoughts much appreciated!

Drain cold, that way all the water from condensation will be at the lowest point.

    +1.
Let it drain while you put the kettle on and get on with a few other jobs, giving it plenty of time to drain.

Yeah sounds like a good idea not to start it then. I'm going to drain then nip and get the oil & filter, so a good hour and a half for it to drain should be enough?

Basically until it pretty much stops dripping.

I'd have thought that any condensation would be sat at the top of the cases?

Gentle ride out to heat things through and then drain would be my choice, provided old oil level is high enough.

All done now, thanks anyway. Bike had no MOT or tax so couldn't take it anywhere to ride. There was a little condensation in the oil but that's no surprise after it being nearly 3 and a half years old!

I went for Castrol power racing 1 - 10/30 semi synth. Two dealers I spoke to recommended it so took the plunge as I couldn't decide! Seems fine tbh, gonna put a few miles on it this week so I'll see how it does
