Guys, going to the TT shortly and would love to have some footage of my visit. I see Aldi are selling some, but not sure how good they'll be. Any advice welcomed. Tonic
I'm just really confused....there's so many to choose from. The GP 3 is defo out the window, not spending £250 on a camera. ..... £100 maybe....
I use Drift Ghost. What I like the most is the fact it can record 1080p video for nearly 3 hours on one battery. It's not the cheapest and video quality not as good as GoPro, but other than that it's a decent camera.
My thoughts having had GoPro from the very first which took 2 AAA batteries and only a 2gb card and recorded at low resolution in 4:3 (how things change...) I would look at the entry level £100 one, and the reason for this is as follows, with GoPro you are buying into the worlds most popular action camera bar none. What this means is a HUGE amount of aftermarket mounts, adapters, additional batteries, tripod adapters etc. etc. I know the Aldi camera will perform almost as well but I just don't think it has the versatility of a GoPro. It will be perfect for some and will give great results but for me the flexibility of the GoPro system will win the day
I only recently got the basic GoPro Hero and I've got to say I am really quite impressed with it. Yes, it doesn't have the features of the loftier models, but for basic (but still excellent quality) video recording, it really does do the trick very well. And as has already been mentioned, there are plenty of mounts and kits out there for them. The below videos are the first ones I did with the camera on the bike at Silverstone - 'only' shot in 720p, but looks pretty good to me! Or, longer video without music:
It takes a memory card so can record aslong as you like providing the memory card can hold the data. The massive bonus of the Aldi on is for £30 you get a small screen to watch playback on. Quality isn't very good on the screen but shows you what you have recorded. Comes with a waterproof mounting case too. I agree with most people that the go pro is great but the basic model doesn't have play back and is over 3x more expensive. Each to their own. As for mounting I'll be using mine on my track bike so will make custom holes for it to fit on the nose cone. Fitted another to my friends bike however and we fitted it across the screen using the holes the bikes already had to hold the screen in place. Have a very short vid somewhere so will post it up later.
The gopro really does seem the way yo go, but due to budget constraints, I'm going to call in at aldi and see if they have some still for sale...... Knowing my luck, they'll have sold out.
If you buy a gopro the 4 has far better picture quality than the 3, I recently bought a 4 silver and picture quality is far superior to my hero 3 silver. I also have a sj4000 ebay jobbie for 40 quid which is superb and comes with every mount you can think of.
If you plan only to upload videos to Youtube then GoPro is a waste of money because the footage from much cheaper cameras will look just as good. Youtube compression kills video quality.
I believe the silver and white 3 were the same as a black 2 but the 4 silver and white are the same as the 3 black. Not sure it's correct but read it before somewhere.
I would say avoid the cheap ones and go with something decent. Its the TT we are talking about so every frame is worth it. Go-pro 1-4 or have a look for Drift cameras. Google action cameras on the website and fingers crossed
The cheaper GoPro Hero (£99 model) is very good - I have one. I had a cheaper Hitachi cam before that which was OK, but the biggest problem with cheap cams is the mounting solutions. GoPro is now so synonymous with action cams that there are literally thousands of different mounts and mounting solutions for them (even the cheap one). When I had the Hitachi cam - I only had what it came with. Leaves you very restricted if you want to do something different. You either have to have something made (3D Printed) or bastardize something together to make it fit, which can mean you compromise on stability, introduce vibration etc. Just something to bear in mind....
I'm using the Drift Ghost S. For me it just makes more sense on a bike due to the shape, included remote & screen. It's also waterproof to 3M without an extra case.
I was at Aldi at 8am on the day they were advertised. Have to be quick at that place or know someone that works there
