Hi folks, I have a 2012 model (2013) ABS blade. Had it from new & only done 1200 miles in two years; but has used almost 1/2 litre of oil. Seems a lot to me. Is that normal? it has done no track days & I don't ride it hard.
Reminds me of the time that an Alfa Romeo dealer forgot to fill my car with oil during a service, and when I rang to complain a few weeks later (after I checked the dipstick), they told me the oil loss was "within tolerances". 4 litres in 3 weeks!?!
While over at the TT this year I needed to top up my RR 09 oil burner. After searching everywhere for a Castrol 1 stockist I Found a great little bike workshop in Castletown. The Mechanic guessed I was on a blade and advised that he's fixed loads of them. It would seem Honda have updated the pistons & rings.
Honda may be 'Happy' with 1 Lt / 1000 Mile, I'm pretty sure the Customers aren't. It's disgraceful, engines in the fifties with tolerances the thickness of the peak of me Cap did better than that! ........ Thought Mr Honda was an Engineer. Mike.
Got the same 2012 ABS (2013) and 3500 miles on it now and other than its yearly oil change never had to top it up. Ran the bike in as per guidelines, ish, then set shift lights to start coming on at 10k rpm so it's not like it has an easy life
Mine was on the limiter just after I pulled out of the slip road from the dealers onto the A2 when it was new, (the Kent crew will know where I mean) only put in around 100ccs in the first 10k miles, just gotta run them in properly guys and get those bores fully bedded in
Not to go too much off topic (well it is my thread anyway) - there seems to be a difference in opinion in running-in. Some say scream the engine early on to 'bed in' the bores & others say take it very easy, gently increasing the revs & never red line. I would say I'am of the later school; but yet my engine drinks a bit oil. is there a right answer?
Mr Honda warrants it for 2 years and 3 if you pay a couple of hundred quid more, can't see an issue myself.
A topic I'm also interested in, is there any clear evidence to support either running in theory? Being a tad cynical I thought the thrash it approach might be recommended by dealers with a vested interest in selling more bikes or spares.
Nothing needs running in these days and has not for as long as I can remember,Golden rules are 1 don't rev from cold let it warm on Tickover and 2 don't labour the engine for at least 500 miles keep it spinning mid range
