Can't beat waking the morning after and finding that the anaesthetic and pain killers have worn off Throbbing like doozy !!
You are not the only one to have done that. Someone I know slammed roller shutter tail gate onto their own left hand slicing the entire tip off. Much more of a mess and ended up being stitched into his stomach to aid skin growth so you are lucky!
It seems that finance has strong medicinal powers. Even though the hospital has said, no work for at least another week, I'm going back. Though on light duties, as my firm only pays SSP, which won't even keep the bike in fuel. And I'm getting back on the bike, I've found that with a bit of squeezing and gritting of teeth I can get my older, baggy gloves on. Luckily as the clutch side it doesn't need to do much work, and in my defence, the physio did say try to flex the finger through its normal movement if you can...
My mate squashed his thumb in a 20 ton press last year that wasn't nice especially when it was my fault for detracting him haha
Went to work this morning, on the bike of course, only to be told that as my sick note said "unfit for work" they couldn't let me be at work. So, I rode home again... Riding wasn't too bad, getting the glove on was a deep breath and go for it moment. After a couple of minutes I forgot about the finger, unless I caught the baggy end of the glove finger on the lever as I was reaching to pull the clutch in, then it was like an electric shock !! I also noticed I was tending to hold my left arm a bit stiff and had to force myself to relax the muscles and grip. Been to the hospital and got a new sick note, or fit note as they're called, so back to work again in the morning, office duties only.
I know how you feel mate , took the top of my thumb off and fractured it cleaning my bike chain (numb nuts) 2 operations later , its not bad a bit weird trying to use indicator switch lol , youll be right mate.
Keithg1748, how did you manage that while cleaning a bike Tom541, have you really been suspended for having an accident at work?
Yep...which is why, I'm guessing, the suspension has been trundled out, was on a final written warning for the "no hands" episode, so this is probably gonna be a "see ya later" !! Will take it to tribunal if things go south. When there is an "investigation", there is no impartiality by the bloke carrying it out, it's really a kangaroo court, they never find that the firm is at fault, no matter what evidence is provided to prove it. It's a case where you're guilty and it's just a matter of deciding on what to dish out as punishment. With the no hands thing, I brought evidence to the hearing to show that taking hands off the bars was quite safe under the circumstances etc.. But his answer was that if I was on the road and the Police saw me do it, then I would be done for dangerous driving with a 3 points and a fine It's all a farce, the company has a blame culture, but it's never them always the employee, they can't accept that accidents sometimes happen through no ones fault. A decent firm would be, "Look have a couple of weeks off on full pay, then come back and do a bit of light duties till things have healed up"
I hope you didn't take that photo in A & E....lol I did and got told off...they then asked if they could use my photo as their camera had a flat battery
I've complete the IOSH 'Managing Safety' course which is good grounding / introduction but know others on here may have higher qualifications. Has the accident been classed as a 'reportable accident' (sure it would) and the HSE been advised of it ? I would write to the MD / Company H & S manager and ask if it has , and if not ask why not
I don't think it has, they were badgering me about going back to work that week to avoid the RIDDOR, I went back 8 days after the accident, so they probably didn't on the technicality.
