Hi guys, I brought my cbr1000rr 04 on Thursday with 16k, I have now done 300miles on it and am worried it seems very underpowered under 6000rpm, alot more than my friends gsxr1000 k4 and even feels about the same as my old gsxr600 k4, this isn't much of a problem as I can gear it but is this normal? It also puffs a single cloud of white smoke at full throttle And when under load peering hard so I'm told(just the one puff) are both these things normal? Oil level seems fine but previous owner filled coolant expansion to brim so it is currently blowing out of the overflow but I will sort this, apart from that and a slight valve ticking that I will have to get used to everything is great!!!
A puff of smoke is not normal, certainly for a Honda that's only done 16k miles. The smoke, coupled with your description of an overflowing expansion bottle, would have me concerned about a head-gasket failure. My first action would be to ensure the radiator is fully topped up (not the expansion bottle, the radiator itself), then get the level of coolant in the expansion bottle to the right level... which from memory is just below max with the bike warmed up. Having done that, I would go for a short ride... if the level in your expansion bottle goes UP, you've got a problem.
I should add that if the level in your radiator is very low, you ought to ensure you bleed it properly. This basically involves topping it up, leave the cap off, getting it up to temperature and flicking the throttle to dislodge any air bubbles.
Will get on that now! Surely it couldn't do a head gasket it 16k! Glad I only payed 2800 for it now :/
I already started removed plugs so got on with that, the seem fine although quite old, someone put alot of copper slip on the threads :s I don't have the right size Compression tester so il source one today.
Just looking down the throttle body's a few valves seem to have very light oil on (as seen on the tissue) is this normal and ok?, apart from that they are very clean!
Stop fart arsing around with it and pay to get it run up on a Dyno, you,ll soon know if it smokes ,overheats and if it's down on power . Most Dyno runs don't cost a fortune and could stop you wasting time wondering if it's ok. If your not careful you,ll waste time and if it needs sending back to the seller he might not pay kindly if you stomp up 3 months later asking for a refund.
My SP1 needed the valve stem oil seals replaced at roughly 14k miles. It gave a small puff of smoke when revved from idle, and then again on full chat. The seals cost next to nothing. Just a matter of getting in there. As above. If u ain't sure go get it checked by a mech.
I've got an 05 Blade and yes under 6k I thought it was a bit slow to pick up, very long geared. I went down one tooth on the front sprocket and it's much better now. Have a rear sprocket with two up also just in case , not fitted yet, maybe try it out on a brands indy track day...
They don't have the torque of the K4 that's for sure, mine feels flat also. They will puff a bit of black smoke at high revs when changing gear it's just fuel, they can also be a little rattley lower down at times. I would dyno it tell the operator you just want it checking out tell him your worries.
Worth adding 16k is when the valve clearance checks should be done, could explain why its a bit valvey
