I enjoyed a bit of a ride out with SimonRR today, thanks mate, (I still can't keep up though) when we stopped for a brew and to check out a bike for Julian (forum member) my battery was flat. The bike three years old now and I guess battery's don't last forever, anyway SimonRR and a stranger lending a hand gave me a push in an attempt to bump start her, I hadn't considered that the bike has a slippy clutch and can't be bump started or that's what appeared to be the case. I remember bumping my RR5 by myself with no problem so I'm assuming it's the slippy clutch, is this the case? In the end the sales chappy from wheels Honda bought out a battery pack and we were away. So the next question is how much will a battery cost me and is it wise to go to Honda?
It's worth popping the seat off to get the battery code as it won't be made by honda, so you'll be able to shop around for one.
Hi Gary, hope your well? I'm off to the canaries for a couple of weeks on Tuesday so it will wait till I get back. It also needs its 8000 mile service and a brake fluid change so it's going to be an expensive October
Bikes fitted with slipper clutches can be bump started just the same as bikes without slipper clutches. Your battery may not of had enuff juice in it to power all the electronics properly like ecu and fuel pump and coils so wouldn't start until another battery was connected allowing enuff power to start everything. I would get your charging system checked tho as a battery is not always the only cause.
Think Honda from memory use YUASA batteries from the factory.....non abs bikes use a piddley 7amp battery and the abs equipped bikes use a 10amp unit.
As above, Slipper Clutch makes no difference. Just watch the MotoGP Bikes, they get bump started all the time
Hi guys Had the same problem with mine,I flattened the battery and when we tried to bump start it it wouldn't have it,as soon as you dropped the clutch it didn't seem to a the drive to the engine,it guessing as soon as you drop the clutch the slipper clutch thinks the back wheel is locking and engages the slipper clutch mechanism just my thoughts. Cheers Stu
Hi Sam As you would normally do it ,sat on the bike 2 people push you up to a decent speed and then drop the clutch and hey presto away you go or you thought you would but not with the blade, never had any issues with my previous bikes doing it this way,so thought it was something to do with the clutch on the blade . Cheers Stu
If you have an alarm fitted then that is a problem. I had the same with mine last winter and i had to replace it with a Yuasa from a Honda dealer. About £50 if i can remember right so all done. Now is on the charger every now and then when not in use
Have to agree with above, neither of my blades have bump started both times battery wasn't fubar , I had just left ignition on too long ! They both where jump started from another bike and never had problems again.
Slight aside, but I had similar problem with the MT09 last winter, battery went dead on what was a virtually new bike. (Turned out to be a manufacturing fault ). Did two things - went for a gel battery rather than replace with standard unit (MotoBatt), definitely hold charge longer if bike is left for any period. Also got myself one of these toys, which I carry if going any distance. - http://www.geniuschargers.com/boost/ Expensive, but works well. Jump started mates gixer, and the wife's cooper s without any problem. Added advantage can also use to recharge iphone or anything that runs off USB.
Been caught out with a flat battery a few times( ABS drain flaw) As above never been able to bump start even on a slope, think there is safe guard to protect the electronics from low voltages but jump starting always OK. Like above got a lithium booster, not used it yet but it's rated for my diesel lump so should find a IL4 a doddle.
Same hear! Tried until me and my father were dripping in sweat! The bike never even tried to start! Ive bump started bikes in the past with totally knackered batteries too!
