The time frame for the recall which wasn't really a recall is pretty much passed on an 09 model dude.

Honda being Honda ignore the fault unless folk complain then we will fix but only within timeframe and not make it a publicly known recall! bit like the ABS situation ignore it is honda's thinking!

Honda extended the warranty for excessive crank noise to five yrs after registration date after that period your sh1t outta luck luck dude!

Are you sure it's the crank shaft that's the issue?
The crank issue makes the bike sound like the engines got a turbo charger fitted as it whines especially on engine overrun with the throttle closed.

The way honda say to test if the crank is at fault is to put the bike in first gear and hold front brake and slowly release the clutch and the whine noise should disappear if the crank is at fault. (Obviously don't dump the clutch out and stall the engine!)

Hi had the same problem on a 2010 fireblade (sounded like a diesel). Bike was using a litre of oil every 1000mile too !

They replaced the crank and thrust bearings under warranty even tho warranty had expired,(Honda extended warranty 4years for crank so 6 years in total.)

No recall you have to complain to get the work done !

£2500 to fix out of warranty.

@bladebhoy to late for your warranty claim sorry :(

Or is it go to your local dealer and ask 2015 cut off i think ??? :)

The 'engine abnormal noise' was never a recall it was a service bulletin!

As said before Hondas way of not publicly owning up to there being an issue with there product so if a honda dealer checks there system the bikes within effected range would show up as clean and no outstanding recalls!

Thanks for all your replies, finally got an answer from Honda today and you can probably guess the answer, no chance. Not even a goodwill gesture .

Looks like Honda has lost another customer and a huge repair bill for myself.

Sorry to hear your on your own but that was honda's plan from the beginning don't spend the money on rolling out a recall and replace every blade in the yrs effected which took them 3 yrs to discover and resolve by the way as bulletin effects 08-10 models, they only fixed blades if the customer kicked up a fuss and even then some dealers didn't want to do the work or even take any notice of the bulletin!

Bit like honda HQ's answer to the ABS issues.......deny there is any issues and wait it out till honda can wash its hands of any repair bills!

Another engine will prob be your cheapest repair option tho dude.

its pretty disgusting behaviour by Honda i really find it hard to believe a company that size could stoop so low to cover up a fault of this magnitude. your probably correct regarding a replacement engine.

    Put a GSXR-1000 engine in it ;)

Sorry to hear that, joking aside.

When the dealer owned up there was a problem with mine which was in July 2012 they agreed to fix it under warranty but made me wait till December when workshop was quiet . I wanted it sorting straight away but agreed to these terms because the bike was out of standard warranty.

Alot more common fault than Honda will own up to:oops:, don't get me started on the oil usage had to top the 2010 blade up every 250 miles !!

Pleased to tell you my 2014 doesn't require topping up with oil between services

    Never contacted Honda.

Shinysideup had already looked into it all when we knew of the problem. My bike is 6 years old in Saturday so not a chance anyway.

I've got an engine lined up. Just waiting on word coming back for to pay for it.

Christ, you guys got me worried about my 09 now. I did realise they changed the crank in 2011 but the info I found before I bought mine seemed to relate to problems in the USA not over here ?
Is it that common then, what should you look out for...mine sounds fine (slightly noisy clutch maybe) doesn't smoke/burn oil but then it's only done 4k. Did the noise just come on one day ? When stripped what was the cause, oil starvation ? Bearing tolerances etc ?
    Thanks...

For me it was a sudden thing, one minute ok the next very noisy. After a strip down the hardening is stripped off the gear that meshes with the clutch basket on the end of the crank. The only solution is a new crank, I'm not sure about the clutch basket

I have a crank available from my 2008 bike - it has done 80k miles and has almost no wear / marks / etc.

Need to work out its value - only thing removed is the generator flywheel part
