If I use my spare non-ABS wheels on my ABS-equipped bike, other that the fact that the ABS light will flash and the ABS will not operate are there any other downsides? Will this totally confuse the Combined Brake system and make it dangerous?
It'll throw a fault code and the ABS light will flash constantly whilst riding. Brakes will go in to default mode. Why not buy additional Traction/ABS rings for ya spare wheels?
Thats only the rear mind, you could easily get someone to tap a few holes. The front is exactly the same as the non ABS. But in relation to a previous question you are better off replacing the abs fuse with a blown fuse, it will stay on constantly but less annoying than a flash. Also it will only go into fail safe once you move off which is bad thing, better have in default from the off. Been running mine in default mode for a while now and quite like it.
It's a good question if I was planning on using them on the street. Fortunately the plan is only ever to use them on track-days (probably with a sets of wets fitted). As the insurance company is unlikely to ever cover track-day damage, I can't see that adding any extra complications?
