Still working on it but it's time just don't have any at the moment 1994 blade now Streetfighter will put some pics up
Nice one! You can do the stick coil conversion on the 94 too, any stick coils from the 929 to the 998 - 2001-2015 will fit. The feedback on it is the bike runs better, returns better fuel mileage, starts easier and obviously maintenance or at least reliability is improved due to the age of the kit. May be snake oil but everyone who has done the conversion on the CBR1000 Hurricane forum reports a happier bike and owner. Got mine from the US on eBay including the coil loom for around £48 all in. New connectors cost me £4 (didn't need them but wanted a neat job) and grommets for the coils to seal in the plug holes another tenner. Wiring was easy if your handy with a soldering iron, you just need to modify the coil loom.
Well, I finally rode the bike today on a bit of a shake down before getting it MOT'd and I have to say I was impressed with the grunt of the old bird. Unfortunately when I refitted the seat before I left home I inadvertently turned off the fuel!!! Yep, you can see where this is leading. I got around 2 miles away and it started running poorly and due to the fact it hasn't been used in 2 years I started fearing the worse to turned and headed for home and got another few hundred yards until it cut out. I then managed to turn the battery right down before realising that the fuel was turned off! Cue a frantic call to my mate who then turned up with a set of leads and got me on my way once more. I then rode about 2 miles in the opposite direction all up hill then the bike cut out with no electrics whatsoever. So I had to freewheel it home and apart from a few 10-20 yard pushes where the road levelled out and went partly uphill, I managed to get it back to the garage in a bath of sweat! As they say, it's all part of the fun, only next time the wife can follow me in the car! So next I now need to resolve the power issue. haha The ride did however highlight that the head bearings are going to need repacking and adjusting before it goes for an MOT.
I remember pushing my rgv250 about 2 miles before I remember I'd not turned the fuel on lol All great fun
Chin up, it happens to the best of us haha. The bike is looking the part. Looking forward to seeing a before and after shot
Bike electrics sorted, must have been the repetitive cranking after starving it of fuel and the fact that when I first purchased it and it didn't turn over, I replaced the 30A fuse with all I had in the garage at the time (20A ) then forgot to change it back! A fresh 30A fuse and she started first time. I'll get some pics when it goes for the MOT.
Small plate has arrived, fitted along with a new R&G led number plate light. It's 7.5x5.5 but I'm not sure if the plate looks too small now!
Did an oil and filter change (Silkolene Pro 4 Energy fully synth as I had it kicking around in the garage) this morning and fitted a new set of pads to the front callipers. However the engine is dropping out on one or maybe two cylinders so I think the original plugs may be due to be changed out if not then I'll be pulling the carbs to clean them out.
Anyone reckon this is carbs not plugs? Personally I reckon it's plugs and with the Fireblade stick coils fitted I can pretty much rule out the coils.
Found the culprit, the grommets were pushing the stick coils upwards off the plugs. I had to remove the original Fireblade grommets and slide the Ford ones further up the stick. Job done! Also fitted some sticky backed screen edge to tidy things up a little until the tinted screen arrives.
Filled the bike with coolant last night and run it up to temp and I have a leak. Pulled the pump this morning and cleaned it up then reassembled it all. It is indeed leaking from the weep hole. Used, low mileage pump ordered from eBay. Should be good to go by Thursday hopefully.
Damn good work mate. All problem solving and plenty of experience gained in the process. I loved tinkering with my SP1 and getting it back up to par.
I have just fitted my new screen and water pump. I've also fitted a switch in parallel with the fan switch until the new one arrives. It also allows me to use it on warm days like today as I've noticed the bike runs quite hot.
Well, it passed the test with no advisories and it really does ride nicely, the only remaining issue now is the temperature is high within 5 miles of riding. The station is only 8 miles from home and but he time I was there with the fan on permanently the temp was almost in the red. It's now back in a million bits, I've just flushed the rad and cleaned the surface of it as there was some shit on the front and I'm just about to flush the block and re assemble everything. If this doesn't cover it then i'm afraid it's probably the head gasket.
After re-assembling everything and running it up it seems that it's still the same, however the system has been bled and using a contact thermometer it seems that the temperatures don't seem to be as high as the gauge is suggesting. It is also obvious when the stat opens as you can feel the instant drop in temperature. All pipes are warm and the rad has no hot spots so it really may be as simple as a knackered temp sender to the gauge. It never boiled over once after running for over an hour inside a warm garage. Also the circulation is cock on and there is no pressure in the pipe from the head to the stat so there is no head gasket pressure causing problems. It wasn't a lost cause as I now know that the inside of the engine is clear, I got a fair bit of rust and sand like product out of the lump and the rad is spotless inside and out. I'm a lot happier now.
