buying my first blade

    Hi Guys,

    I'm looking at buying my first blade, so just after a bit of advice.

    I was going to buy another CBR600RR but everyone i know is pushing me to buy a CBR1000RR, as i'm a big lad (6,1, 235lbs ) although i can't really see that much difference in size between them.

    i have about £8k to spend

    Private seller or Dealer ?
    Age i'm assuming the newer the better
    what sort of mileage is too much ?

    what should i be looking out for on the bike

    8 grand is a good budget.

    If you are in the preliminary stages, I would spend a couple of hours on eBay and Auto Trader to check stock. You should be able to get a good, low mileage 2011 - 2014ish for that money. Some might warn against earlier ABS models. If you do a thread search for 'ABS' on this forum you will learn a bit.

    Private Vs dealer is always a question. Perhaps more care and research is required for a private purchase (HPI etc) but you generally get a feel for the seller first-up. It's easy to determine a well maintained bike. Lie on the ground and look UNDER the belly pan and swing arm. That will tell you whether the bike has had a 'quick sale once over' or not. Also, original Owner's Manual and Service Books are a bonus.

    Major service is required for Blades at 16,000 miles. For your money, I would be looking for sub-10,000 mile bikes. Good luck!!

    As for the mileage mate less is better but depends what your going to do with it? If it will only come out on a sunny day then it’s less important as you will gain it back over time(if you keep it long enough)? Being a litre bike it should do nearly 100k so wouldn’t worry too much, there’s a few on here with 70k + I’ve done 32k in under 3 years and only changed oil and filters.

    Good point, and right on the money - but I'd respectfully say less is better in all circumstances.

    However, there's a positive for bikes that are regularly ridden. They don't suffer the 'dry bores' of infrequent start-ups, and the prospect of clogged oil and fuel lines etc. Members will know of my recent thread regarding 'Fuel Stabilisers' because there is a known problem of fuel turning to 'varnish' (in the longer stored bikes) and clogging carbs/injectors.

    My RR4 has just turned over 5,600 miles. Starts and rides like a gem. BUT, the internals MIGHT show more wear than Raphael's 32,000 miler. I guess I'll never know because I'll be 100 when it reaches 32,000. (And it'll still be in the lounge room with the cat cushion!:))

    Hey Mac. That bike is a good looker. The gold wheels always make the black look better.

    I'm wondering if the owner REALLY owns/rides the bike or is selling it for someone else. anyone who KNOWS bikes will not refer to the pillion pegs as 'rearsets'. The bike has 'street hooks' fitted (popularised by Sato: https://www.satoracing.com/08cbr1000rrstreethooks.htm ) which enable a bike to be tied to a trailer etc, but are also threaded to allow replacement of pillion hanger and pegs. You might ask whether he has the pillion pegs AND the pillion seat. (Always good for resale whether you need them or not).

    Also, and importantly, find out why the person is selling it. I am always wary of the 'I don't get time to ride it excuse' because anyone who loves bikes ALWAYS makes time. Having had it for only one year is curious - unless he's committed to another purchase.

    Yep, fair call. The guy has more than likely loaded the price expecting to be knocked about.

    If you have ready money that is very powerful. It's already a good price, but I agree. He may settle for around 5200; you would be extremely lucky to get it for 5.

    Don't rush in with excitement though. There are plenty available. (Also ask how long it has been advertised. the longer it's been up for sale, the more negotiable he'll be!!;))

    Re Nigel's post, some who don't get to ride it often enough may still have their bikes serviced every year so should have logs of the services anyway.
    Like mine. It's a 2013 plate, only done just over 7,000 miles but gets serviced every 12 months anyway. Have all receipts & stamps too.
    But then I'm a bit anal about things like that. ;)

    Yep. The conscientious ones would have or do the service. I am double-anal because I have a manila folder for each bike with all invoices/receipts clipped in date order.:rolleyes: The stupid thing about that is that I better maintain my bike records than I did in the old cheque book and stub days!!

    worth a look if near by, looks a bargain to me, low miles, 12plate spec, cat d means nothing, panel damage more than likely,

    Hi my old blade is now up for sale at Bellevue Honda at Southend its 2014 HRC..8k miles and is in great condition always cleaned and full history up for 7995 but no doubt would be up for a offer....

    I've seen that, and that is good value even at 7995, considering one owner and the extras.

    I went round and had a look, bike is immaculate i haggled him down to 5k, but he won't cover the MOT and service for that ( he would if i gave him the asking price)

    thoughts ???

    In the world of sales, he has offered a good concession. The bike 'appears' as if it would sail through an MoT. Do you have a reliable tech who has done your CBR600? For the sake of 30 quid (MoT fee) I reckon you should stump up.

    Next real service is not due until 16,000 miles, which might come along rather quick. Costs around 400 quid.

    Your predicament? If you think the bike is a worthy purchase, is it worth setting aside 400 for the service and paying the five grand. He's probably got 5 fixed firmly in mind and won't budge any further, although my cheekiness would run an offer of 4900 to him with the money in an envelope!!

    Edited to say that I just noticed it will need a rear reflector to pass MoT.
