2004 Honda CBR1000rr I have all kinds of accessories, phone charger, HID projecters, Underglow LED, GPS Just recently my batter started to die figured it was due to my gps and leds sense there wireless they'll always draw some kinda power so I got a tender to keep the battery charged, the batter will go dead after like a week without riding so wasn't too bad. Now my problem is my bike dies while I'm riding it at night when my HID on "I have a switch to turn them on/off" bike wont die on me during the day time. I changed my RR to a hot shot RR " rectifier" now I can ride my bike at night. Now the problem I have I just got myself a voltage meter for the bike due to it dying on me just going about 10 miles down the road. Push started it was gonna go back home but the bike but it seemed like everything was working again so I turned around and continued my 600 mile ride, at one point I noticed my dash turned off meaning the bike was about to die "I was stuck in traffic the fan kicked on" so I kept the bike it 3k dash came back on and I made it threw. To make a long story short, My bike will be running 13.7 give or take a few then all the sudden its not charging drops to 12 then 11.5 and after about a min or 2 it come back up 13.7.
From the description it sounds like you either have an intermittent charge or an intermittent high load. Was the charging constant with the previous rectifier? (albeit lower than what you needed). Does the battery hold a charge ok on it's own? Are the connections from the rectifier through the the battery solid? FWIW I ran dual HIDs for a short while, but they slowly drained more power than the charging system put in, so I switched back to single HIDs rather than upgrade the charging system. Still works ok on a 6 year old battery.
Well I changed the rr because I know they do go bad sometimes, and with my hid on it drew to much power to charge the battery. Battery is about 6 months old and holds a charge. I cant trace the wires from the rr to the battery they are in a really bad spot I do know that the connector that goes from the RR to the battery has a burn mark inside. You think maybe its the connector causing it?
TBH it could be any of those, although if you can check that the connections are at least tight then it will eliminate a high resistance in the connections which would create heat and a voltage drop. Is it possible to run the bike with the standard lamps to reduce the electrical load and see how you get on?
I don't have the normal lights anymore the projector kit I had to remove the whole headlight assembly and put it in an oven to remove the lins and replace with the projectors so no normal lights for me, but I do have a switch to turn them off which will be a normal load
Yes I'm with you there, I've seen that mod on Youtube. Am I right in thinking that your bike never dies during the day when your lights are off? I'm leaning towards the problem being the rectifier not providing enough/constant power. Are you able to monitor the voltage when on the move as I would be checking for a constant voltage when the lights are not on (perhaps on the way to work), and then again when they are on (on the way home).
Alright tonight I took a 20 min video and it didnt do it tonight, but i took some pics and some screen shots of the video to big to put on here unless i upload to YouTube Not sure which pick is what using my phone but theres pics with out lights on, with, hi beam, and while im moving lights and hi beams. Was gonna turn then off and get a pic of that while im moving but the roads out here suck
Initially those readings look as expected where the charge is constant when revving, but drops at idle speed. Picture 4 almost throws a spanner in the works with the voltage rising to 14v at just below 1,500rpm, although the bike's not under load in that shot so I'll ignore that reading. However, the picture of the burned connection, now that's a different matter. A burned connection represents an intermittent connection or high resistance. I'd get shot of that straight away. Can you replace the connection with crimp terminals such as bullet plugs or similar?
I could crimp them I have the lil tool set. I was actually last night looking for a replacement connector but I think its entwined in the wiring harness Or I was thinking of just going straight to the battery from the RR not sure if hats a good idea haven't seen anything online about it
