I replaced both seals and one started leaking almost straight away. I figured I damaged it putting it on. However I have it apart again with new seal in hand, and I suspect I actually had it in upside down. Can anyone tell me definitively which is correct way round. There is a side with little notches in, and a side with the spring. Which side sits up against the flat washer, and which side is down towards the retaining clip and dust seal? Incidentally I had spring side down towards retaining clip. Thanks for help.
Thanks Nigel. I have a Haynes manual but it says to install the new oil seal. Nothing about direction. That photo does not really help me here.
Not sure you have that right. The pic shows the fork bottom up. I should have realised when I posted the pic that it probably need a full view showing the brake caliper so you'd understand the diff between top and bottom. Apologies for that. As pictured, you're actually seeing the fork upside down. The spring faces the ground and then the dust seal goes over it.
The pressure of the oil works with the spring on the seal to keep it sealed, As mentioned spring to the oil side
