I know this might be a bit of a daft question but when you take your 17 sp for a service at a dealers do they plug anything in to read the ecu for faults , tick over etc ? as I am tempted to get the ecu flashed after yesterday the snatchy throttle and the poor running at low speeds is doing my head in , but I didn't want the dealer to put everything back in that they have got rid of , has anybody had a 2017 bikes ecu done and is it better and worth the £350 , thanks

I have never known a dealer to plug in to diagnostics unless they were looking for a problem that you had raised.

Plus, they would have to re flash the ECU to put it back to oem and I doubt very much they would have the equipment for flashing. Normally only tuners that have that sort of equipment.

I just had 12 month service done. Closest they got to ECU was engine idle speed:rolleyes:.

I had earlier asked about throttle response and was told they don't have the capability to 'adjust' the ECU. Giant fob off I reckon, but just passing on their words.

For the good of your bike, I would go to specialist tuner!

I've had the ECU on my standard 2017 flashed. After a service at an independent garage the bike developed a problem with the idle speed. I was concerned that Honda would be able to tell that the ECU had been flashed when I took it to a main dealer for them to investigate so I had the original firmware put back. The tuner said they wouldn't be able to tell but I had it put back anyway which the tuner did for free. The problem was fixed, or at least went away, so I had the custom map but back. The tuner had done a number of other 2017s in the year since I had mine done originally so I had the benefit of the tweaks they had made over that period. He also popped it on the dyno to check and tweak the fuelling and only charged me an hour's labour. It's now running better then ever.

All that is just a recommendation for BSD Performance in Peterborough, I guess. To answer your specific question, I don't think Honda dealers can tell that changes have been made to the ECU. The exception is that if you disconnect the servo motor completely and rely on the tuner to turn off the error code in the ECU the dealer might wonder why there isn't a warning light on the dash.

What model 2017? Base, ABS, SP or SP2? And what ECU flashing software? Woolich? FTECU? Something else?

All the current ECU flashes I am familiar with irreversibly alter the ECU and there is no going back to the actual Honda image. All the tuner can do is restore the ECU to a stock version of the tuning software vendors image.

A UK spec 2017 ABS. They use the Woolich software, I believe. I can't say for sure they restored the ECU back to its original state, although that's what I asked them to do. Maybe they just reversed the changes they had made to the maps and other settings.

'yeah, unfortunately with the current Generation Honda ECU, the best you will get is "returned settings to original stock state" which is not going to be "put the Honda bits and bytes back in such a way as to not allow Honda to know that the ECU has been tampered with".

The above was possible previously, but not possible at the current time with the newest Honda ECUs.

At the 12k service a couple of years back, I asked the dealer to do a full diag check which they did and provided me with few pages of print outs. All the parameters were within the expected range.
So if you ask them they should do the diag but don't expect them to tune the ECU (they will be cutting their own throat).
