Hello people, Just needing a bit of advice really, I got both tyres replaced on my bike in October, the rear tyre is fine but the front one has cracking all over the center, they're Bridgestone S22s, they're used every working day and sometimes one the weekend (prior to lockdown), I'm just not sure why it would've happened, whether it needs replacing already and whether it could have been prevented, they aren't cheap tyres so I'm not overly impressed! I've attached an image of the front tyre. Thanks in advance!
I'd be going back for a refund\replacement with that mate, I'd say you've got a faulty tyre there... I'd be loathe to put any miles on that too... Apart from a very slow ride to the tyre shop if they can't come to you....
Having said that you'll probably have to deal with Bridgestone direct to get any kind of refund (due to buying them last year)....
Never seen anything like that before, Can't see how that would happen from normal road riding or on track. Got to be a faulty tyre or maybe tyre pressure issue. Either way I'd be back to the tyre shop with it!!
What was the date of manufacture of the tyre? https://www.oponeo.co.uk/blog/tyre-age-and-other-tyre-markings
Worn out in the middle down to casing .....how many miles on it?? My rear supercorsa just started to just do it before I changed it yesterday but had good mileage out of it...
Thanks for the quick replies! The manufacturer date was 1819 so it wasn't on the shelf long before I got it... Front brake was binding but had the pads replaced on my way back from having the tyre fitted. Probably had about 1200 - 1400 miles out of it, just not sure why the rear would be fine if it was distance, if I'd done 6000 miles I wouldn't be so mad about replacing it but it just seems they've not had much use but the front is really suffering. That tyre profile looks extremely square too! I agree with all the comments posted on this thread. You need to be contacting someone about this. That isn't normal wear in my opinion. Chin
I'd check to see if it's still binding at the front, hopefully they did more than change the pads to stop it binding but if they didn't my guess is that that might still be happening resulting in the wear. Never seen anything like that before though. Must steer like crap. On the plus side, it's going to feel fucking quick once you've fixed them.
Rear is good, attached a pic Appreciate all the help, I'll go to Bridgestone and see what they say, failing that I'll contact the dealer that fitted them for me and see what he says. I'm due a service soon so when all this lockdown blows over I'll get a service and break check done at my usual place, check there is no binding. There were aware of binding when I had them replaced anyway. Thanks a lot
No cracks, but squared too! Do you do a lot of motorway miles? Answer doesn't compensate for the cracking, but would for the squaring off. Chin
Unless your usage changes in the summer months you may be better off with T30s or T31s. They'll last a lot better and still give you loads of grip. I only switched from the T30s to the S22s after 2 very cold track days (novice group) when I found I wanted something a bit stickier. On the road the T30s were superb.
Never seen that kind of wear on a front tyre. Looks like you have been riding with the front brake on. Looks like there is a ridge on the top edge of the cracks. Did this happen gradually?
Sadly its a 7 mile ride to work, 5 of that is motorway, the other 2 are a slower straight line I do ride more in the summer when the weather is good but not every weekend, I mainly went for the S22s for the triple compound, thought it would be better at higher speed corners but it's not really been the weather for it since I got them... I think it has happened gradually but honestly, apart from tyre pressure I don't check my tyres over that oven except to check if they're flat before I ride.
Pull the bike over on its stand and get someone to spin the wheel to see if it spins freely, ,,,,, should get a least a couple of revolutions As @dern says it could be binding brakes
Would hearing the pads on the disc when I roll it forward count as binding? If so, I probably don't need to try that as it definitely makes a noise when I roll it, it doesn't actually feel like there's any resistance and there is no scoring on the disc, just sounds like there is very slight contact between the pads and disc but not enough to actually cause any issues.
You should hear a little bit of noise between the discs and pads but not so much that it doesn't allow for a revolution or two of spinning freely. Personally I don't think binding is the problem, all that would cause is some serious heat build up in the brakes.
