hey all, small problem so looking for some advice...

2007 model with standard forks and internals and there is a teeny tiny smear of thin oil appearing on the big hex head on the left fork top.

I have tried to 'nip' it up but it doesnt want to move in either direction with the amount of effort I'm comfortable to use. I am a complete mechanical doofus so i have to tread lightly with anything involving spanners and what not.

taking off the little collar thing that adjusts the preload(?) the little circlip thing went piiing and disappeared for 10 minutes until i found it on the floor about 20 feet from the bike!

the smear of oil seems to be coming from the preload adjuster nut but that cant be nipped up, can it?

I have turned the screw slot (rebound adjuster?) all the way in and all the way back out and then back to where i had it set before and will see if that makes any difference. My thinking is that just moving everything that can move will make the leak go away allllllll on its own.

Putting the collar thing back, i could NOT get that damn circlip back on at all. took the other side off the see if there was a knack and now i cant get that one back on either. I know, i know, why did i take that one off but i refer back to the mechanical doofus statement earlier...

So, the question is, do those collars actually seal/protect anything? I have left them off from both fork tops as I ran out of expletives to call them trying to fit them back on. Is it a problem to leave those preload collars off?

i can attach pics if that helps but some wisdom would be really appreciated...

    thanks for the replies..

I do still have the little jesus clips so i dont need any parts but i cant fit them - and therefore the preload adjuster collars - back on so am wondering if that will allow any ingress of snot and grit that could cause problems.

I will probably still have the leak/weep/sweat of fork oil coming out if my pathetic efforts of simply rotating everything that rotates makes no difference so if anyone has any ideas as to that problem, again, i would be very grateful...

thank you all very much! I shall wait and see what happens with the leak, and i use that term very loosely as it the smallest of seeps - and then get someone smarter than me to start undoing stuff if it doesnt miraculously fix itself...
