As bike is coming up to 2 years old i need to make a decision whether to take out the extended warranty.
    12 months is £320
    24 months is £495

I’ve only had the bike since January so not had it that long. I never had a problem with my 2012 blade in the 6 years i had it but the SP2 has a lot more things to go wrong.

I suppose if i take it out and something goes wrong it will be worth having so i suppose it is a bit of a gamble.

    What do you all think?

I took an extended warranty on my Ducati , the rear shock started weeping oil and I got it replaced. Never had anything else go wrong with it since then.

I would not bother personally. If something major did go wrong, I'd argue on the basis of fit for purpose... I've never bought extended warranties. Now if it was a BMW.....

I wouldn't bother personally, take the gamble....put that money to one side, and use it if anything should go wrong. Even if it was a BMW I wouldn't, they are superb when it comes to gestures of goodwill.

Me too never taken extended warranties.
When my BMW 7 series car went out of warranty BMW quoted me over £2000 for a years extra cover, 2 grand would pay for a lot of work.
Even the £300+ honda quoting would still cover a lot of work. If it's got full history I dont see the point.
You can always take it in for a warranty expiry check before hand fir peace of mind by having a mechanic going over it to check it over prior to it expiring?
Not wishing to offend anyone but I would only ever consider it for a ducati as just too many have problems and warranty claims but even then it's usually during the first 18 months that the gremlins show them selves

I have previously taken out extended warranty and in both cases the value of the policy just about covered the cost of the work.

I don't bother anymore, it may not suit everyone but I have a rainy day account, I set aside £ 100 per month and stick it in National savings, if I need it, its there for 'that blocked drain or broken window'

Even some months won a small amount, - just waiting for the cool million!

My blade is 11 years and 42,000 miles old. I have had it from new and the only item to fail so far was a radiator cap...

Ooops, just remembered that I had to have the cam chain tensioner replaced!

Other than that, just wear and tear items like brake pads, a headlamp bulb and the head bearings.

If i take out extended warranty before the original warranty expires it covers claims up to the purchase price of the bike. If taken out after the original warranty runs out it covers up to £3000.

As peeps have pointed out major stuff generally happens early. If you are hot on maintenance it 'should' only be minor jobs that cost a a few hundred ie about the cost of the policy itself. It's a gamble but in the long term the warranty provider is the winner otherwise it would not be a viable business!

I bought extended warranty with the 1299, best £900 I spent, but you had to buy it when you purchased the bike, it wasn't available to renew when 2 years old.

    All of the Honda warranty extensions are provided through this company;

    https://www.thewarrantygroup.eu/uk/twg-warranty-services-inc

I know there are various tiers for buying it within 30 days of the bike, within 2 years of the bikes age and anything after that.

How effective any of them are compared to the first 24months is something I don't know though!

I has extended warranties on car in the days 12 months warranty was standard and never regretted it.
However like insurances nowadays, check the servicing and any repair requirement: do you have to hae the bike serviced by a honda dealer only and can you choose who repairs your bike

It does say the bike has to be serviced as per schedule and at Honda dealer.
Think any repairs would need to be done at the Honda dealer too.

Which would answer it for me. I prefer to service my own bike. Honda bike dealers are shite in my experience. Pay more and get your bike damaged.... The money you save home servicing and not paying the warranty would easily offset any gain.

Paid £200 quid for a 2 year warranty extension back in 2014, can’t believe how much that has gone up.

That said they replaced the complete lock set and coded it when it was in the extended period so that and the 2 years breakdown paid for itself.

Using Honda replacement repair parts is good (as you know insurers generally insist on non OEM or used parts unless the insured pays for the difference)
Back to warranty. You need to consider the pros & cons. NSR touched on one aspect.
Once you are locked in the contract you may also have to use Honda service parts. Oil, brake fluid, pads, etc. This may or may not be critical to you.

for me more important is the care & competence of the dealer.
If you have such a dealer and have had issues with your bike(+ a deep enough pocket:)), then maybe it would be beneficial to have the extended cover. Which is what I would probably do.

I've been there done that with a outside warranty company, I'd never recommend anyone to take one out. stick with manufacture extended warranty, it may cost more but its worth it.
Got stung for over £2k on a BMW 330d on the light ecu module going down. they said lights & bulbs are not covered, even though it wasn't the lights that failed. BMW dealer charged £800 for module, which included a complete ECU update, so basically a 2007 car was now a 2012 spec, update blew the boothtooth module and the LED rear lights at £1k. Although we never asked for it BMW give it to you for free, but warn they are not liable for other module failure during re-progamming, all we got was the labour half price as a gesture Sat next to our car was a 7series which had a similar issue with a bill for over £3k for just a blown ecu after a update..

Apparently the extended warranty that you get with a used bike (so not within first 30 days or first 2 years - not commenting on those) isn't worth the paper its written on and thats straight from a Honda dealers warranty man - he might have just been fed up that day though. It will do for basic mechanical failures but apparently if you read the small print there's a lot of what ifs and maybes. But all three extensions are run by the same company on behalf of Honda which is what confuses me.

I know Kawasaki and Piaggio Group are both direct with the manufacturer, not sure about other brands.

There's the Ts and Cs for the over 2yrs warranty.

Thank you for posting this. I have had a read through and there are lots that it doesn’t say are covered e.g. for the suspension it says this,
Loss of fluid or pressure or mechanical failure of the springs. Excluding damage to the seals following pitting or
    corrosion.
No mention of the servo motors for electronic suspension.....
    The electrical system says this,
Starter motor and solenoid including pre-engagement mechanism, alternator, regulator, rectifier, but excluding all
external wires and terminals. Speedometer, tachometer.
No mention of any ecu system at all, suspension control module or any other module so are those covered??
If the only parts covered are what is actually listed in the above link then it isn’t worth it as most of the stuff on our bikes won’t be covered.
Think i need clarification from Honda
