Don’t get excited lozzy I said speedo not speedos ;)
I have noticed that when I go past one of them speed signs my speedo says about 34-35 but the sign says 30.
Then I went out today with my phone with Navmii running and it said about the same thing
29-30 on the phone was 33-34 on the speedo:eek:
    My question is
1: will it make my mileage more than it is :(
2: and can you get then reset:mad:

    1. Bound to affect it.
    2. Don't know.

Crap answers I know but I'm not really here posting answers. Just tipsy and thought I'd mention for giggles that there used to be a three digit radar board in a 30 zone in Saltcoats.
Was not far after an awkward little mini roundabout and I was in a flatbed towing cable drums so never even seen it lit up. Still thought every time I passed though that it was the dumbest thing I'd ever seen. Even at my ripe old age I classed it as a challenge rather than a deterrent - to the local tearaways seeing the first digit light up must have been a right of passage. :p

Can think of a few places it'd be interesting to see one installed. :)

P.S. Mine is 33 on the bike for 30 on the sign.

Speedo's over reading the speed is very common I believe. Quite often when one of the bike mags tests top speed they give the true figure, measured via radar etc and also give the speedometers reading, which at high speeds is not uncommon to be 20mph or so out of line. I used to have a standalone Tom Tom and Honda (Civics) were the worst for over reading, sat nav would say 50 and the car would suggest 58. Some of the BMW cars I've had were far more accurate, pretty much spot on with the sat nav.

Have always assumed the odometer reading would be right though. I figured the displayed speed was artificially altered as a 'safety' feature but the car would know and display the genuine distance travelled. I could well be wrong though, be an interesting line in an advert to say, 'my bike over reads by 10% so although it says my bike has travelled 10,000 miles, in reality, it's less'.

Hi. I work in this field as a Systems Engineer.

The speed has a offset, it is a requirement by law. Some cars/bikes are more 'true' than others.. as they have to factor in potential for errors, however a 3 mph offset at 30mph sounds about right.

The distance calculated by the odo is NOT calculated by the speed. It is calculated by the number of rotations of the wheels, and the tyre circumference. (at least on something modern with ABS rings).

    Hope that helps.

Really good bit of kit, especially handy when changing sprockets and tyre sizes. Be careful with the top speed recall function though, everytime you press it the top speed is displayed on the dash and the mileage goes up at the same time on your odo! Its easy to add a few miles on your bike just by recalling a 3 digit top speed a few times.
