Need advice fellas. 2015 Fireblade trackbike. Did a track day today and finished up with a rattling/noisy 3rd gear. All other gears are still quiet in drive/incl on the stand. It hit false neutral twice mid corner before the noise was really obvious. This gearbox has hit false neutral many times on the track in several gears though. It doesn't feel as solid as my 07 Blade. I have an aftermarket quickshifter and admittedly wasn't firm enough on it changing gears until I got used to that pressure so that may have started another problem. Maybe I've damaged a tooth as it feels like it's skipping a tooth or the selector is perhaps not engaging third gear effectively. Anyone had this issue or have some suggestions? Cheers
Hi and welcome to the forum. I’m no tech wiz but third gear is a well documented Achilles heal on track from what I’ve read. There are beefed up alternatives that sound to resolve the issue. No doubt someone with more info will be along to advise.
i only know what I've read before I bought my bike but what @Boothman said seems to be bang on and if you google a bit there are several threads over the web about it... here's link to what is apparently one of the recommended fixes..... not cheap to fit though apparently :-( .. http://www.novaracing.co.uk/ProductHondaCBR1000RRReplacement3rdOutputGear33T20082014.html
T Thanks for the info and link guys. Our guys mentioned here in Oz about Nova's gear so looks like the goods apart from a full HRC gearing rebuild.
Had the 2010 and 2012 used for track use and 3rd gears were weak, its a known fault you could get the gears polished hardened think they call it , ,
With this paper thin looking gear I'm surprised it lasted 8500km. The price we pay for weight reduction.
That's bad! I would have thought it would be a dog that goes, not the teeth . What causes the teeth to go I wonder?
Alot of power being banged through a very small area. You would think it would take less than 8 years to sort the problem though.
Absolutely, I'm happy to gain 200gm weight for the sake of not pulling an engine out. My 07 Blade was track flogged forvl 10000km and never had an issue, engine or box.
