Just purchased a new 2011 1000rr and it was previously crashed into a ditch after lowsiding. The only thing replaced/repaired was the fairings and a few resprays and it was pretty much good to go. As far as I’m aware the low side wasn’t serious, the pictures looked okay just messed up fairings. however, there is a ticking sound I can hear (it’s louder on video) but is it something serious. Performance wise, it is fine. Does the valve clearance need adjusting? https://www.dropbox.com/s/bh8u388t086svj9/Video 18-10-2021, 10 57 30 am.mp4?dl=0 help would be appreciated ))
it was either one I was thinking of but I’m not too technical about this sort of thing. It has 18,000 miles at the moment. Or is this normal. It doesn’t seem constant, once it gets warm it starts to change but that may be because the idle speed lowers.
Valves need checking at 16k, but many report there was no shim replacement needed (though some do). Not easy to say from the video but maybe someone who’s had CCT issues will be able to advise better.
Hard to tell much from my phone speaker. My water damaged, been dropped, been abused a lot, phone speaker lol. Valve clearances rarely need adjusting. I’ve had mine checked once, I insisted on visiting the garage when the top was off to inspect ( check it had been done) and they were 100% in spec after 17000 miles. It does sound chain like on my phone but as I say it’s not a great speaker.
Could be so many things, even just a loose fastener but there's definitely something that you want to address. Take the fairings off and identify the source using a mechanics stethoscope,
If you can’t find anything physically rattling, it could be as mentioned above the cam chain tensioner. It’s unlikely valve clearance, if anything the clearance can reduce as the valves bed into the valve seat. Wouldn’t completely rule it out though.
Through ear buds it sounded just like my 2012 before it went for a service. Garage said they did the CCT and the slight noise had gone away, so probably what's been mentioned above.
I couldn’t really make out the sounds as my phones knackered but just to add, there’s no set mileage a cct is good for as I’ve had them rattle 2k miles after replacement and another go for 30k.
Thank you everyone for your responses. Most likely the CCT then, I’ll have to see what garage says when I go into next service
Sounds like the cct, if you hold a screwdriver to the engine and listen to it you can usually hear it rattling away if it is.
That doesn’t sound like valves, also valve clearance will tend to get smaller not bigger as the valve bangs against the valve seat and wears making the clearance tighter to the cam. Sound more cam chain like to me.
Does that model still have a PAIR valve? When I first got my RR5 I was all over it with the stethoscope to track down a mystery ticking. Turned out to be the reed valves in the PAIR circuit. P.S. naw, just listened again - not the pair valves. I'll go camchain too.
