    2004/2005 1000RR will not start.

The bike has only 5000 miles but has been stood indoors for circa 9 years and wont run. I replaced the fuel pump as the old one did not run/wirr. I have investigated the system over the past 4 days and aside from purchasing a new ECU am lost where to go next. As I understand it, it appears to be a lack of fuel to the cylinders. I believe this because when I connect 12v to the primary injectors on and off a few times after having the fuel pump primed and then crank the bike it fires and runs intermittently at tickover but very erratically and dies. If I just prime one injector I get a similar result with partial running again until the small amount of fuel is consumed after which cranking just cranks on and on with no firing up.
    I've:
    * Confirmed 12v at the Primary and Secondary injectors with the ignition on and whilst cranking.
    * Confirmed run switch is operating ok as with the ignition on when cycling the kill switch the fuel pump recycles/runs briefly.
    * Flushed the injectors with WD40 and they spray/inject well with WD40 pressure and 12v removed/applied.
    * No fault codes on the indicator panel.
    * Have not measured fuel pressure but it flows out under pressure if the pump is on with the injector rail feed disconnected.
    * Recharged the new battery.

Is there a sensor that would prevent the ECU from opening the injectors or is there a way I can confirm the ECU is asking the injectors to open? The bike is in great condition and ran fine until it was parked 9 years ago!

    Your help is much appreciated....

Tricky one as 9 years of not going anywhere could have Rotted all sorts.
It sounds like you have fuel and a supply to the injectors. The fuel pump will stop priming when the rail is up to pressure and won't kick back in until the pressure drops again.
Short of removing the injectors to test, you can assume that they are doing their job.
Have you laid the plugs out and turned the engine over to check for 4 good sparks?

Hi Muffking, have not touched the plugs as when I get some fuel into the cylinders it runs briefly albeit badly. It will fire with a hint of WD40 in the intakes so I'm assuming the sparking/ignition side is good. The injectors sprayed well today with WD40 can rigged up and power applied. It is as if the ECU is not earthing the injectors and so the cylinders are being starved of fuel. She has been parked in an airconditioned room all this time. I might try to get one of the injector testers and see if one cylinder runs with that connected ie operating but it will take a few days...

Is there a list of sensors or a sensor that would allow the fuel pump to prime, engine crank but ECU not to operate the injectors?

PS...Have you got a soft copy of that lovely colour wiring diagram pretty please ;)

This may still be another one of those, "If I had a penny for every time it was the spark plug" moments. For the sake of £40, they have been a prime suspect many times.

Most sensors stop the fuel pump from priming. I don't know of any that will stop the injectors firing.
I can email you a couple of diagrams in full res.

I will on the advice of one most senior, change the spark plugs as I do believe I have a new set, but, my money is not in this domain as she fires and runs (barely) at the hint of fuel in the cylinders....... Perhaps the cam sensor is U/S???

You may still be right, but the old adage of needing fuel, air and a spark means that the spark still needs to be verified.
Let us know how you get on.

I take it the fuel isn’t 9 years old ? I’d have to try fresh plugs if I was having your issue, just to take them out of the equation.

Many thanks for your help. it does make sense, but she fires when there is a little fuel, which is new :). just tried the side stand and clutch/in gear operation/prevent crank etc and they all operate as expected. It is starved of fuel.....but why?

Can I reset or reboot the ECU, have had it out and tapped it to encourage it to wake up and operate properly but it just ignored me.....pins looked clean and all present.

Injectors could possibly be gummed with old fuel including any inline fuel filters, use brake cleaner instead of wd40 as it’s a lot more volatile but I would personally start with changing any fuel filters and spark plugs and brake cleaner.

Tip sensor in the nose cone? If activated will cause engine to cut out/not start (not sure if it disables fuel or ignition but would assume former). Try bypassing that. Have read about cam sensors chewing themselves up as well so could be worth popping that out.

Have you got an alarm? Could be faulty

Thanks, I did suspect the injectors as the most likely culprit but having tested them with a rigged up WD40 spray can they appear to not be blocked at all and when I apply 12v to them whilst installed it appears to put fuel in the cylinders as the motor fires up runs very roughly for a couple of seconds and then dies. This continues for a couple of starts, using up the fuel and then she just cranks over and over again with no firing. The only time I get her to fire is when I put 12 v on the installed injectors. This is post having the ignition on and the fuel pump wirr.

Would the Crank Shaft Position Sensor (CMP), the Cam Shaft Position Sensor (CKP) or the ECT Sensor, if they were defective cause the fault? I will take them out and con check them tomorrow. :(

Thanks Lock, I think (and am hoping) it could be any of those sensors and so will try and test as many of them as I can tomorrow.

Can’t help with your bike problems. But good to see a fellow Fireblade owner out in KSA. I worked in Riyadh, Dhahran and Tabuk for a while. Stay safe on those roads bro.

Have made some enquiries and Allen at Motmatrix, who impressed me with his knowledge of all things ECU, seems to think the ECU is defective. I will send it to them where it will be tested and hopefully they will get another suitable 38770-MEL-643 in stock shortly.... will update as and when....We will ride again Tonto!

Update for those that may look at this in the future....ECU has been tested and confirmed U/S, apparently one of the three internal PCB's is not working... Now on the waiting list for another ECU to become available...Patience is a virtue Tonto!

    Thanks for the helpful suggestions..

    Hi Crispiebits,
I was reading every word that was written as I now have the same issue. I turned the bike off with the kill switch while sitting at some lights and not wanting the bike to get too hot and then after 1 minute I tried to turn it back on and it wouldn't start again. It just cranked and cranked but didn't cough or anything. Like no spark or no fuel. When I got it home I started investigating. I figured the only thing I did was turn the kill switch off so I started there. The kill switch primes the fuel pump so I know the switch is fine. I can switch it on and off and I can hear the fuel pump priming each time. I have fuel at the injector rails but no injectors. If I spray some fuel in directly it fires up until it uses it all. I have checked TIP sensor, stand and neutral sensors and all fine. Fuses all look fine, I can hear the relays clicking when I turn the kill switch on. I don't have any fault lights on the dash. The spark plugs are just under a year old but I was riding it and everything was fine (until it wasn't). I don't know what else to try but I guess I will send the ecu in to get looked at like you did as I am out of ideas and stuck without my bike.

Did you get the bike going in the end? Was it the ECU?

Thanks for any ideas or thoughts (PLEASE)
