What’s wrong with my engine 2008 CBR1000RR 12000 Miles

    I’m having an issue with my engine ( see attached video ) it ticks over unevenly and feels like it’s dropping a whole cylinder when driving, sometimes it’s ok and pulls hard then drops back to a rough idle and really poor acceleration again..

    I’ve pulled the tank and cleaned and checked all the cables under the tank disconnecting cleaning and reinserting all the connectors, including the big bunch or earth wires mounted to the frame.

    I’ve drained the fuel and refilled with fresh stuff.


    Has anyone got an idea what to try next ?

    It’s on the original spark plugs and no engine mods apart from a Akrapovic end can, bikes in really nice condition always kept in a garage and no major abuse apart from some high revs while driving.

    Could it be a spark plug or injector ? or something else ? ..how can I diagnose this issue ? No engine light is being triggered..can I plug in an OMDB box like in a car ? or because no engine light is being triggered there is no point ?

    Just looking for some ideas or options before I have to throw £100 at some new spark plugs or even worse some new injectors.

    Any idea much appreciated

    Have you made sure that the vaccum hose is connected? if i remember correctly, it's under the tank on the rhs of the bike (Looking from behind) and it plugs into the airbox i think? It's worth a look

    Is one of the exhaust header pipes noticeably cooler. Sounds electrical to me seems very on off.
    Have you rode it?
    From an absolute cold start is it better or worse?

    it definitely seems better for about the first 5-10 seconds and then goes bad …if i cut the engine and try again it’s still bad….you seem to get only one chance after that all bad

    once you have checked all your vaccume pipes, an ECU reset would be next on the list.
    Although from your video, the engine is still running "cold", the bike is fluctutating between cold and normal idle.
    Worth checking the temerature sensor

    At least check/try to clean the fuel filter

    So just an update but I got this fixed in the end by cleaning the injectors, rather then cleaning each one in turn I pulled the tank off and fabricated an airtight connection between a can of carb cleaner ( colt brand ) and the fuel line using a wine bottle plastic cork ( cut to fit ) and the carb cleaner plastic straw ( drilled through the cork with a small drill ) on the end of the carb cleaner, and started the engine while pushing down on the carb cleaner to pressurise the fuel system …I ran it for about 5 mins on the carb cleaner ..engine was a bit rough running on the carb cleaner but it ran okish..I then let it sit for 20mins to help dissolve anything it came in contact with..I then replaced the fuel tank and fired it up again, once the fresh fuel got pulled through it was 90% fixed with no rough idle ..i’ve added some fuel injector cleaner into the tank now and will run that for a while to hopefully fix it 100%

    Just a word of warning, anything plastic / rubber the carb cleaner comes into contact with can be damaged, so don’t soak it for too long.

    So total fix cost in the end was £4 for the colt carb cleaner

    That’s good news, well done!

    Just out of interest, have you been running the bike on cheap supermarket e10 petrol a lot? That might explain the cause of the problem perhaps?

    I think this is a good reason to move to the expensive Shell Vpower or Esso Supreme 99 stuff (at least once every few tankfuls) !

    Glad you sorted it. Thanks for sharing your technique.
    If running E10 I'd empty and clean the tank every year. Bit of a faf for a fireblade.
