Won't rev past 7.

    So off to the storming rally tomorrow, lubed the chain, checked tyre pressures and filled the tank. I've not really opened the bike up properly until tonight, so turned into a quiet longish road in 2nd gear and tried it full gas bike gets to 7 grand but will not rev any further, sort of bogging down. presumably it should rev through to the red line/limiter??? any ideas or where I should start to look? bike came from Bristol and I'm in Newcastle so can't just pop into the shop. it's a 2007 model. thanks in advance for any pointers, regards Davey. ​

    I had a very similar thing on my 04 many years ago, turned out to be the fuel pump.

    Has it only just started doing this, or is the first time you have tried it it above 7k?
    Does it pull strongly up to 7k?
    Does it keep the same speed, or slow down?

    Does it do it at roughly the same rev in any gear. If so, go straight for the spark plugs. Common cause on the 04-07.

    Need more info. Mileage now and last few years?
    Might be as simple as the fuel is 2 years old+ and the tank/ pump needs cleaning out and fresh fuel.
    For sure your not seeing any of the real power have you ridden anything similar? If not be careful after trying stuff. I changed the fuel filter on Ducati and shit myself.

    If its bogging at 7000 just roll back then give steady throttle in second gear, it's to see if it will pull throughto the red line. Mine only did it in second gear under load but if backed off then wound on progressivly it would pull to the red. It was an intermittent problem.
    Fitted new plugs no difference,.
    Last thing I did was to remove the fuel pump, check it over, couldn't see a problem. Put it all back together and it's been fine since.
    I assumed it was a fuel pipe kinked and when it was at full load was not getting enough fuel.
    Never really got to the real problem but it's been fine since. You can check the secondry injectiors with the tank pulled back and air box top off, it should throw fuel in @ 5000 revs plus.

    apologies for the late response, away for the weekend and no internet to use. Thanks for all the replies, I will start Selmer50mark's suggestions first as it will rev to the redline in neutral and doe's only do it under load, so fingers crossed. it's trying to find a road quiet and long enough to test as these thing get to the wrong side 70 really quickly!!!!

    Definitely the right side of 70, that's where all the fun is :D
    Mine only spluttered under load, especially after 2nd gear as the load is greater in a higher gear.

    So, took the bike out last night to test your theory and it bogs at 7,500/8000 in every gear, and as advised if the throttle is rolled back very gently it clears and rev's further but you have to really feather it, I did see 10,000 at one point but it's no fun in this range and spoils the enjoyment. I would imagine if someone was trying for a top speed on a closed private road ahem, they would struggle to break the 120 mark.
    looks like it will have to come apart and trace the fuel/breather line to see if anything is pinched etc. Would a faulty fuel pump allow everything to be fine under 8000 or would you see starvation in the lower rev range? I'm hoping you are right and it's a cheap fix as I hold no hope of help from the shop as they are not answering my e-mails, so much for the we pride our selves on customer care etc. on the website patter!

    Sounds like the secondary injectors are not cutting in which is normally around 7-8k .

    Due to a lack of fuel in the case of a faulty fuel pump - symptoms exactly I had many years ago.

    Secondary injectors start to mist just over 5000 then feed more depending on how much you give it. You can see them fueling the stacks with the air top off when you blip over 5000. I had the exact same problem with bogging down between 7500/8500 (intermittent) the injection system was all good. I personally think it's from pump to injection problem.

    The old MOT checks show the bike only did about a thousand miles a year for the last few years, I wonder if the previous owner was trickling around or short shifting so the secondary set of injectors were hardly used and have blocked a little? Anyway because I'm a lazy tight arse I'll try some injector cleaner in and see if that improves thing before I start pulling stuff apart. Unless anyone thinks it's a waste of time or not a good idea?

    BG44K will clear anything that can be cleaned with an additive. Have you emptied the tank?

    A fresh tank of v power and a bottle of wynns injector cleaner has changed nothing so far, I took the bike up the duel carriageway keeping it above 5000 to see if the 2nd set would clear but no improvement, I didn't go through the full tank though as my ears could take no more! T.B.H I would have been more surprised if something had happened but it was a cheap 1st go. So it looks like it will have to come apart for a proper look, since I will be in there I looked at replacement pumps and saw this one on ebay

    on another note the shop did get back to me and suggested taking the bike to a local dealer/shop and getting a quote to fix it, but no one even replied to my e-mail's, I suspect no one wants to start fettling a bike they have nothing to do with and paying the mechanics to work on it just to raise a quote.
    any help/advise appreciated, regards Davey.

    I think It would have to go on a dyno to find it. Check pump first then move on from there, it might have crap around the strainer on the pump

    i definitely think its worth changing the spark plugs, i had the same symptoms ..changed the plugs ....now perfect

    I ordered a set of plugs last night and if they come before the weekend I will have a go at changing them, I don't have a garage so can't do it midweek, looking at YouTube vid's it looks a right fanny on! do you have to remove the the tank to change them and how long doe's it normally take? Thanks, Davey.

    As was said above, it's worth just lifting and refitting the tank to try to un-kink the fuel lines. It's so easy to pinch/kink a line under there.
