Met up with @Kevin1 at his house and he led us out on to Middleton in Teesdale going through Sedbergh, Kirkby Stephen,Brough, then over the Pennines and down into Middleton in Teesdale. Parked up and brew n bacon bun in cafe, then back the same way Heavy drizzle over the tops going to and back  it was so hard to see and I had a moment with the rear spinning up and going sideways, certainly caught my attention  cracking road over the Pennines, even better in the dry I bet :D .
Soon dried out once off the tops. I will be doing that run again before biking season is over:).

Have some time off so was heading to Whitby yesterday. Forecast wasn't great but no rain forecast until later afternoon so headed out once the morning traffic had buggered off. Didn't even make it to the Humber Bridge before I was getting soaked, and either I was having a stroke or there was lightening going on.

So yesterday I rode on some boring roads out to nowhere good or interesting and back

    <sulk><sulk><sulk>
A lovely sunny day so I rolled out to Peacehaven, about 6 miles east along the coast and had lunch with my brother.
Yes I ate too much but so what?
Back to the bike and... It turns over but won't start.
Try to do the usual checks I learnt way back but...
Fuel? Well the fuel tank goes slosh slosh when I rock it but not no carburettor to tickle.
Ignition? Checks are limited too as even getting to a spark-plug is a major strip down so I check the fuses et al.
Air? Opening and closing the throttle changes the sound so probably...
Obviously just pushing the button hopefully until the battery goes flat is silly.
I'm going with something electrical so not a car-park fix with the kit under the back seat.
    Call out the AA.
    <pause 1.5 hrs>
Nice man repeats my tests and he has a booster battery but nothing.
    He arranges a 'tow' home.
    <pause 1.5hrs>
I am home. A hungry hawk got fed, I will tackle the fix tomorrow but....
What quick diagnosis should I have tried? My 'standard' list, learnt in the 1960s is obviously outdated.

Point. ...but I admit that I don't think I've ever noticed it.
Just tried the key in the silence of my workshop (It's been 4 hours).
Nothing other than the GPS chiming in.
Oh well. I'll start with that.
    Thanks

ROTFL Been caught by that before so that was the first check.
I noticed that the AA man tried that too so he's probably been called out on one of them before.

Problem is if it turns over then it's a bit more involved.
Did you say it turns over, but doesn't prime?
Maybe pump, pump relay, pump supply?

I don't mean it's in the wrong position I mean the contacts inside the switch aren't making when its in the right position, happend to me once. I agitated the switch to death until it made and the pump primed. Havent touched that switch since. Should be an easy enough diagnosis if the pump isn't priming.

Never understood why people use the kill switch to turn the engine off instead of turning the key to off o_O.
Yes in the case of a stuck throttle or a spill .
Each to their own I suppose.

    OMG exactly!
Removed, cleaned, good squirt of switch cleaner/lube.
    Works.

I had exact same problem with mine about 10 years ago. AA guy rattled the kill switch off/on about 20 times. I said with great confidence “that won’t fix it, I never use the kill switch”.

    It started straight away…

    Haven’t touched the switch since.

    You're welcome :D

It really doesn't give you much faith in the AA does it.

I thought they did quite well.
The call out guy was helpful and tested everything he could reach and got down to it being an electrical fault effecting the fuel pump...
... but he knew that was in the fuel tank so he called for a tow truck.
The tow guy took me home including helping push it up the garden path and onto the patio.
