I do not want to change my standard exhaust just now, however I want it to sound better, silly question but is there any changes that can be made?

    Rr5 by the way!

You can disconnect the "flapper" valve and/or gut the innards of the can.

What's the purpose of the flapper valve and what difference will it make to the engine,

Not sure about gutting the inerds? Sound a bit drastic?

    Exhaust Flapper Valve Mod

I have disconnected the exhaust valve it takes 5 mins and doesn't affect the fueling. The bike sounds a lot better plus it doesn't cost anything which will get me by until I can afford a new Can. With it connected the valve only opens up after 4000rpm. There are plenty of you tube vids on this.

Sure I also saw a vid of a guy drilling the baffles somehow. As said youtube is the place to look. Let us know how you get on

I've just bought a carbon exhaust cover to improve the look, a new can triples my insurance so I'll give that a miss for now? I'll look at this valve first, butchering the original can is not going to happen!!!

    Thanks guys

I would call it... "improving" rather than butchering myself. If your worried, buy one secondhand to "improve"

    Hi again Carl,
As you saw and heard on Sunday I have done this to my RR8 and I think it's an improvement. I'm not sure if JM1 and Parky realise that yours is an RR5 as their bikes are like mine. The exhaust flapper mod on an RR8 onwards is to disconnect the cable that goes into the end can (disconnect at the opposite end of the cable - where it goes into an electrical actuator - this means that both exhaust outlets are permanently open at all revs now). If you haven't got a cable running into the end can then I expect that there's no mod to be made... Hopefully someone will prove me wrong and explain how you can easily get the result that you want!
    Cheers,
    Ed

    Hi Edd
I have a cable to a flappy paddle in line with my link pipe, I'm told it opens at 4000 revs and if disconnected it make the exhaust sound a little better at low revs? I'm not sure what effect this will have on the engine management, fuelling etc?

It doesn't affect fueling significantly and you can reconnect it if you don't like it

Looks like your bike is good for this too then Carl.
Mine is certainly better for it. As JM1 says, you can reconnect anyway if it's not any better.

P.S. I didn't like the affect it had on my 06 or my 08, but I ended up fitting aftermarket cans to both anyway.

Thanks for that jm1 the article suggest there is no problem disconnecting this valve, what did you not like and why, you could make my mind up to do or not to do, that is my question?

Well it makes a very subtle difference to the fueling. Can't really describe it in words! Just try it and see what you think.

Headboy2011 is selling a standard can; if you don't want to "improve" yours buy that to play around with and then you have the standard one if you don't get on with it... Of you really do butcher it ;-)

On my rr7 I drilled 2 20mm holes through the baffle plate, sounds super now :0)
