after having my bike fail the MOT on the side flush mount indicators (even though they shouldnt have) i have been thinking about other options for indicators. with the mirror indicators i can at least keep the flush mounts and wire them both up
i got some of these off scotty80 at a good price!

i pulled them apart and started modifying them.

one of the studs has to be cut off as the distance between the mounting points are smaller on the old mirrors.

i took the mirror off the base to make it easier to modify the base. one of the bolts was seized solid and snapped :(
i carefully drilled it out and all was good again.

pulling the front cover off i somehow managed to snap the little lug at the bottom...

i didnt have any alloy to make a base adaptor so i used and old number plate, i then realised it was slightly too thin.

i bought some 5mm A4 acrylic sheet off good ol ebay to make the adaptors.

i had to grind the mirror base flat where the stud was,

then started re making the adaptor

i had a little go at testing the indicators with new led bulbs.

this bit was a pain in the arse,
drilling holes through the base in the right place at the right angle wasnt easy as the stud that was ground flat is moulded in the alloy.
the drill bit tends to wander towards the softer alloy instead of going where you want it too. i got the holes roughly right and then used a file and dremel to get it right.

    dusted over the lense.

before and after a few coats

    DOUBLE test fit!
if it wasnt enough of a pain in the arse getting the mounting hole in the right place. i had to do it again to match

lense test fitted in the housing. looking stealthy.

then came the wiring.. it was quite fiddly getting the nosecone off, i dont remember the old blade being as fragile.

fantastic thread.. well done danidge! mirrors look fantastic.. did think of doing this to my bike one day. Do the mirrors now stick out slightly further now or is it just the pictures?

    Cheers mate (Y)
i dont think they stick out any more than the old ones but they do sit a bit lower.
look at the old vs new photo, it shows the differance from sitting on the bike.

I have flush mounted fronts and an integrated rear, now having doubts about the MOT :( may have to speak nicely to the guy who does my testing and take the originals down just in case.

Excellent thread mate ! I didn't even think you needed indicators on a bike for an mot, only requirement is that if they are on a bike they have to work ! An sva test does require them and they need an approved mark...

i think that the integrated rear light are definitely a fail. although it depends on how anal your tester is.
the thing that pissed me off is that he passed my flush ones last year and when i said that he just said they have changed things on the MOT.
    (talking bullshit)

it is correct that if you have lights on the bike they have to work and mine did. he failed them for being obscured... even though they not. he claimed they could not be seen from the front.
anyway that is when i went to work and had a look on the MOT computer. (i test cars not bikes)
it clearly says in black and white that the angle of direction indicators face is not part of the test there just need to be two at the front and two at the back.
i changed the indicators temporarily anyway to avoid any hassle. i also printed off what the bike MOT manual says but he still wasnt having any of it.
nobody likes to be proven wrong though do they :p
