Non original bodywork, loads of Chinese bodywork around for these. You want it as original as possible at the risk of stating the Obvious!

General stuff that I'm sure you probably already know, not specific to the 954's:
    • If there's any engine covers fitted (like R&G or GB Racing covers) make sure they are not there to cover up a previous incident.
    • Bounce the forks a couple times, then run a finger around the fork stanchions near the seal, make sure there's no fork oil leaking.
    • Also, when buying any sports bike, check bolts and fasteners for little holes where they've been lock-wired, indicating a bike that's been raced. Axle nuts, sump plugs, oil filler caps, and brake caliper bolts are probably the main ones.

    BTW - wasn't the 2002 model a 929cc? There's your first red flag.

    2000/01 was the 929, 2002/03 was the 954. 2004 saw the first 1000cc Fireblade.

I thought I'd heard of some reg/rec issues with these too?? I never kept mine long enough to find out, wrote one off after 1800 miles and traded the other for the 04 version after 3000.

I did look at these a couple of years ago and they are fetching decent money for a good one. There's loads that come up with big mileages and are being sold for strong cash. So it's worth holding for the right one.

If I was in the market for one, and I have been before......this is the one I'd go for, totally original and looks the business in blue!!!! Higher end price wise but easily worth that money!

Nice that, always fancied the blue.

I had the red/black and a yellow/blue. I only bought the yellow/blue because a Harley dealer had taken it px and had not idea how much it was worth and wanted it shifted, was a bargain. Really didn't like the colour much so it got traded.

Originally wanted a 954 last year when I got back into biking but couldn't find a decent one at the right price, so I bought the '14.
Well, now I'm looking at another SP1 or maybe an SP2. I think I just prefer bikes from 90's and early 2000's and the SP1 regardless of what people say about it (looking at you John McGuiness :D) was a cracking bike.

I had the red/black one second hand for a couple of years and traded that for the yellow/navy new in a decent deal from the showroom. I wanted to keep that as I thought it looked a bit different in those colours but one wet evening I braked too hard when the car in front decided to stop suddenly when he spotted someone he thought was about to cross in front of him. Front wheel let go. Bike went under the Focus and I went across to the opposite curb. Police car right behind! He got his broom out and swept up the bits.
Bike was written off although a couple of months later I got a phone call from someone who had bought it and wanted to know any history.

When you say SP1 are you referring to the V Twin model? If not its just SP. ;)

    Yes I'm talking about the Honda SP-1, VTR1000SP-Y, RC51, RVT1000, 999cc V-Twin 2000-2006 just to be perfectly clear :D

Strong money for a good one.

I like to mention that to the local Honda dealer. They bought a surplus and couldn't shift em back in the day, ended up selling them for under what they paid. ;)

Yes much clearer that, you obviously know your onions! (Either that or you just googled it:D) its just alot of PEOPLE:rolleyes: refer to the 2017 SP as an SP1, even more so when they brought out the SP2.

Yeah, and it's a shame. I think they were worth every penny (about 11K in 2000 which was expensive). If only the front end was sorted from the factory, they would have gotten much better press. I re-valved mine and fitted 10mm preload spacers cut from water pipe - which completely transformed the bike. Plus the 2000 blade was such a good bike, it was kind of competing for sales even if you didn't consider the Mille and the Ducati.

Anyway I digress - this thread is supposed to be about the 954. :D

Sorry......I apologise, I didn't read as far down as 'early 90s to early 2000 bikes'

I just saw SP1 and thought the worst!!! ;):D

Carry on talking about 954s now, sorry o_O
