HI , can anyone talk me through this please only i aint sure, do i have to support the rear frame, as shock is under tension ?? was thinking a bar through the hollow frame and using axle stands, do i need to do this,?? and does the exhaust have to be removed to drop the shock. or, using my paddock stand and chocking under the rear tyre ?? thanks in advance , Rolls
Would be easier using an abba stand but am sure you can using a bar and axle stands, you do need to take the weight off the shock, not sure about taking the exhaust off I'm sure Arthur could give you more advice though
yeah not sure about the pipe only the bike is not to hand at the moment, so i thought i would ask that question, its just i want to take the shock off and give it a dam good clean now the iffy weather is here, as its a bit of a sod to get to. in- situ.(is that french) must be, not in my dictionary, looked up swas-en nauf not in there either (probably spelt it wrong) ha ha
I don't remember taking the exhaust off when I changed mine, but it was a few years ago, that said it would only be the rear box and link pipe just to give you a bit more room. You will need to get the bike up to a decent height to make the job a bit easier, a bike ramp does help. An ABBA stand would be great, but the bar and axle stands should work, just make sure you get the rear wheel a decent height off the ground. I used a cheap bike lift that I got from Makro, trouble was it was hydraulic, and had a tendency to go down overnight. I seem to remember the top bolt was a bit of a fiddle, but otherwise not too hard a job. A Haynes manual should give you more detail, and worth having if you are not sure.
i have just got a 2004 blade cd. it says "lift the rear wheel of the ground" so will a rear paddock stand suffice, surely with the tyre off the ground you have taken the tension out of the rear shock, am i missing something here,my mate said you have to lift the frame, but no mention of this in the cd, my mind cant seem to get around this one, why doesn't the cd mention this ?? surely the ABBA stand does the same as a paddock stand, so help out this "dumbass".
You can't use a paddock stand. You need to find another way to lift the wheel off the ground to allow the swinging arm to be able to move up and down - the thing that stops it is the shock - take that away and there is nothing to stop the rear end of the bike dropping. Simples!
