With the price of 17-18 SP2s being discounted (arguably the 19 SP as well with Honda/dealer contribution), which is the better road biased bike and why?

Everyone will have their specific usage but for this discussion lets say road/track use 95/5% (by milage), Electronic Ohlins remain.......

They are essentially the same bike with the main 'noticeable' difference being the SP2's forged Marchesinis. They will give a distinct handling advantage on track, and do, from my experience of comparison, make it a better road bike in the twisties.

The SP2 price has dropped so much, but that price will also be reflected in your own resale price whenever the time comes.

Isn't the electronic package on the 2019 supposed to better than the 17/18 bikes ?

Not so much that the extra power potential and limited production of the SP2 is negated by the new software on the 2019 SP.. The untapped power of the SP2 cylinder head with the correct cams is quite substantial.

If available at a similar price then a 2019 SP would be the smarter choice over the 2017/18 SP, neither of which are limited production runs.

True, but for a 95% road use, I don't believe there would be a noticeable difference.

It's perhaps fair to say that if Honda won't allow an 'uprade' on the 17 - 18s to the 2019 ECU, it suggests Honda themselves don't see a meritable benefit to the rider experience.
