Hi all just a quick question,
Does anyone know if the calipers are the same on both bikes ? I know the holes on the 929 are 62mm from centre to centre - but dont know what they are on the 954, if this helps

I've just laid across the boot of the car with my Fat Max and as close as I can see under the conditions 62mm is a pretty fair estimate.

    Hello all,
I thought I'd give you an update on my front brakes:) after god knows how long ive had problems with my front brakes i think ive finally sorted them out..
As you'll be aware ive fitted a new front wheel well second hand, after buggering up the first one when a bolt broke as i was fitting the rotary discs back on after powder coating, Do you some times wish you'd left it be in the first place.? I fitted new pads (Nissin) all round to find i had major problems with the front ones, couldn't stop them from juddering & squealing.Genuine Honda pads but they had no Anti sqeal plates.Tried a second hand set of brake discs but still the same so fitted the old ones back on, Finally i just bought some after market pads. After spending 30 mins trying to get the old ones out i have come to the conclusion they are to long and when braking they were not returning slightly and in fact were staying on.
    Many thanks to

Bloody brakes again, Does anyone know what would cause the brake calliper pistons not to return mid way through a ride ?? Was on my way to work early morning weather pretty much today Freezing, stopped at traffic lights front brake on waiting.. Set of but front brakes on quite a lot..

pulled over to the side of the road pulled front leaver hard on then seemed OK for the rest the journey, been OK since but this is the second time its happened?

    Any thoughts ?

As the pistons are floating, they're not pulled back into the calliper when the pressure is released. They just free their grip on the disc. That's why it sounds like they're binding when you push the bike. Crud will invade the gap between the piston and pot wall and can stop the pressure coming off and cause a lock on, especially at this time of year. It may free itself on application and reapplication and clear itself of rubbish but it's best to strip and clean it all.

    Have a look here.

    Caliper Action - YouTube

    LOOK at the 3D animation

Common fault causing the pistons not to retract is a build up of corrosion under the seal in the calipar, this makes the seal grip the piston too much and will not stretch and retract.

It seem like all the problems started when I got my wheels powered coated, but thinking now its just a coincidence. As you are aware I've changed the wheel as I buggered it by snapping a bolt in it, also changed the rotory discs
I have replaced the seals last summer, but have been told the chrome finish has badly worn off the pots on the left calliper . And worn on the right. I have looked into getting new pots but they are so expensive. I'm now thinking of getting some calipers off eBay but how do I know there not gonna be the same. The problem with mine is the bike weathers outside 24/7. the calipers off a 954 are 62mm from hole centre to hole centre. Not sure if 929 are the same

I'm pretty sure the 929 & 954 are the same..........the Disc's are for sure as I fitted 954 disc's to my last 929 (the centres are gold on 954 and black on 929.

Just to let you all know the 929 & 954 calipers are the same set up, the same 62mm hole spacing. The reason for the different part number is the piston pots are a different size you would need 929 seals if required

When you fitted new pads, did you push the pistons into the calipers to get the new pads into the calipers?
