I recently purchased stock exhaust from "Samd1985" which he had modified, having followed some threads on other Fireblade web sites. The exhaust had all of the internals removed (Cat, partitions between each chamber including the internal pressure flap in the middle of the muffler), so basically it is one big chamber inside.

The exhaust was in good condition with just surface dirt, but I wanted to make sure it lasted after all the time and effort that had been put into modifying it, so I sent it away for sand blasting and powder coating in a heat resistant black satin finish. This is how it came back :

Took my time assembling it and took advantage of the lower fairing being off and gave the bike a good clean. Kept the 02 Sensor Connected, but disconnected the Exhaust Outlet flap, so now both outlets are open all the time.

Made sure everything lined up perfectly and it did, not adjustments needed at all.

Was really pleased, it went back together looking totally original.

Checked everything over, alignment and torque of all the allen bolts, started it up and wow...............it sounded fantastic, I have to be honest and say it sounds as good as any after-marked exhaust I've heard. It sounds somewhere between a bellow and a rasp at higher rpm.

What I like is that it looks totally standard and if like me you like the style/asthetics of the original exhaust, then this is perfect.

I was expecting some changes to the way the bike ran, but I really was surprised that it idled perfectly at the same rpm as it did with the standard exhaust on (Around 1100 - 1200rpm) with no hunting at all.

I will be fitting a power commander and have it mapped, just to ensure I get fuelling spot on, and to make the most of the free flowing setup. But I'm happy the bike is running what I would consider as good as it was on the standard exhaust.

So, a good day all round, finished of with a nice ride and a bike that sounded like it should have done when it came out of the factory.

Here's a video clip of the modified exhaust, but as usual they always sound crap on a computer.

Sounds good I've done similar, and just done the flapper mod the only thing and I'm being fussy is the welding I know no one can see it but it looks like a mouse has ran all over it don't want to upset anybody but I work for a F1 company and everything has got to be just so

Hi Clarkey - I know what you mean about the welding, I think it looks worse than it is as it wasn't ground back. The welding is MIG/TIG, and is actually good, but compared to F1 standards I know what you mean.

You must work for McLaren then........... living at Woking and them being so close. I pass their entrance most evening on my way to work.

As you say though, the good thing is that the side of the muffler that you need to cut to remove the internals is the side that you don't see. as it's totally hidden.

Looks good Jim! Glad to see my old exhaust is being enjoyed :) I loved the 'wolf in sheep's clothing' look that it gives, as well as the growling noise it made!

    Enjoy...

I like that a lot Jim, I like the styling of the original exhaust.
Just out of interest where did you get your exhaust blasted and painted and how much?
The paint on them is so poor, mine is flaking away and soon as the winter gets here its going to be rust central.
was going to try and get it off myself and rattle can it, but wasnt sure what was the best paint?
any help would be good, cheers!

I had it done at K&N Refinishing in Portchester (Outskirts of Portsmouth), Sand Blasted and Powder Coated in Heat Resistant Satin Black £70 all in.

    Hi Simoncelli

Certainly cheaper than a quality aftermarket, sounds as good, and when mapped gives about 5bhp increase in power after 5k, and also adds 4lbs + of toque, so gives the same as a quality aftermarket there too.

    Glad you liked it.

You won't get anyone riding with you when they see your rear tyre, they'll think your WAY to quick........... Looks spot on.

    Jim
