had a little bump today ( in the car thankfully ) basically was following a van down a quiet street and he pulls over to the right and slows down as if he is going to park, so i carry on as normal to go past him, he then turn back out into my side of the road without indicating or looking in his mirrors and then stops, i slam on the brakes and stop just about 1ft away from his van, and then again without looking in his mirrors starts to reverse into a drive and as the front of his van swings out he hits the front of my car, he admitted it was 100% his fault and was happy to exchange details, but what do i do next, do i inform my insurance company, do i contact a company like accident management or do i just contact his insurance company and wait for them to sort things out ?
Contact your company and give all his details over and they will take over from there mate, you may have to give a written statement and a sketch of the incident. Make sure you mention that he admitted 100% liability
also as i only bought the car 5 weeks ago, the dvla have still not transfered over the details and i am still not classed as the registered keeper
As Martin says, contact your insurance company and let them know what's happened. Let them deal with it. If he's at fault then they'll sort it out.
Shouldn't cause an issue mate, worse case will slow down payment too the repairer but no time penalty for yourself
I am sure that if you bought the car 5 weeks ago the DVLA know about the change, the post can be a bit slow in getting back the details to you so just get in touch with your insurance and they will sort if for you
If you have filled out the relevant parts of the V5 then all is good Fez and the rest is just admin process so not to worry. Marty hit the nail on the head, notifying the insurance company ASAP and getting the forms all filled out for them is the quickest way to get everything sorted. If he has admitted liability and the damage is minor then maybe he can settle the bill for cash with you and you can cancel your claim through insurance although the accident will stay on file regardless of you actually officially claiming or not
With v5 you can apply for a new one for free if you have the small part or about 30quid if you don't so no big issue
yes it is minor damage but because my car is white the wing and front bumper will all need a respray because they were never made in white so the respray cost is likely to be quite high, it still might be worth nipping down to a body shop and getting a quote though just in case
I wouldn't settle with cash as before you know it you could be hit with a whiplash claim saying you hit him, or you could end up with whiplash or some side affect later down the line and there will be no record of your claim
did you get a pic or written admission of liability? My dad got hit, woman driver said 100% her fault, then when my dad claimed she changed her story and said it was him at fault....in the end it was a mess that my dad was out of pocket by hundreds, had to sell the car as he only had 3rd party on it.
exchanged details ect but i am going to phone the guy tonight so sort out for sure what is happening to he seemed a honest bloke so fingers crossed he doesnt change his story
Fez mate, IMO its best left to the insurers to sort. Doesn't matter if he says its his fault or not, the assessor will take the details and they sort out liability between them and recommend what you should settle on. Contacting him won't go great if a dispute arises. Best thing you can do is let them settle it, keep out of it, and if its a simple case should be sorted in your favour promptly. Fingers crossed for ya mate. The car had a respray? Is that declared to the insurance company?
Get it tied up as quickly as possible, giving him time to think will just increase the chances he will start to alter his story. I'm not a fan of ambulance chasing accident management companies , but they do know how to sew up a deal. if you got any pictures get them backed up....Don't mess on, do it now, Good luck. Mike.
I'd personally contact my insurance company to advise there's been an accident and leave it at that. You may be surprised and receive a call from the other parties insurers, meaning you don't process the claim via your insurance, meaning there's no record of a "no fault claim" which sadly can affect your insurance premium. There's no I'd call the bloke, his insurance company maybe.
Aside from swift contacting of the insurers the most important part of the story is to state that you were STATIONARY when the Third Party Hit you! If that's not agreed it then leaves the Van Driver the opportunity to say "I was reversing in to a space, minding my own business, when some Loon wazzed up the street speeding and hit my wing, mid manouver!" This is why I run Blackvue Vehicle Recorders on my Vehicles to help avoid this type of shyte. also dont forget if there is any slight doubt in ur mind wether or not this guy has given you correct detailsor may change his story at a later stage, ger urself down the cop shop and report the accident and fill in a RTA booklet detailing everything and i mean everything even the tiniest details that YOU may find irrelevant, but could be the clincher in making sure u are paid out. you have 24 hrs from time of accident to report it to the cops and take in ur paperwork. i know ur waiitng for logbook but the dvla date stamp all the mail they ger in so ur logbook with ur details on as new reg keeper will start fro the date they got it in swansea.
thanks for all your input guys, i certainly was stationary when he hit me so there is no getting out of it for him, i had to phone him tonight to get all of his insurance details as at the time i stupidy missed a few bits, during the conversation we agreed that i would pop round the local body shops tomorrow and if i can get a quote that he is happy with then he will pay for the repairs out of his own pocket without getting the insurance companies involved, ( i am happy to do this as if the roles were reversed i would try to do the exact same thing ) but if the repair bill will be too high then we will be contacting the insurance companies tomorrow night and get it sorted that way, as i said before he seems a genuine guy who knows he is in the wrong and just wants get my car fixed and forget about it
