Hi What is your opinion about airbags for motorcycles? As is referred in http://www.airbagjacket.eu/airbag_jacket_news.html Mark Marquez fell at 339Km/h during the GP Mugello and he had few complications due to a device like this.... Spidi has something related and i found this video that seems interesting...
I think they are still a ways from perfecting the tech for normal street use, yes there are manufacturers selling airbag kit in the stores at the moment but it's still a young technology in this market area. Yes they work well when used at the track but the street is a whole different ball game, at the track a rider can fall at almost 200mph and slide along the Tarmac without hitting anything bar some grass n then usually loads of gravel (unfortunatly not always) but on the road there are kerbs, drains, walls other vehicles parked & oncoming that can and do a lot of the damage to a person all possibly within the first 10 feet of a fall never mind the 100's of feet a racer can slide before coming to a stop! In the right circumstances I have no doubt they can help save people but it does have its limitations, the technology will of course get better and move on but for now I feel they are still more suited to the race track environment.
Can just imagine, you pull up at your favorite bikers stop, get off your bike trying to cool but forget to unclip your airbag, walk away and "bag" you're Michelin man
a few mates have one, 2 have it from sidi, and have worked on both occasions very well and saved some serious damage, another one has the new one from dainese, hasn't tried it luckily
SimonRR referred "Can just imagine, you pull up at your favorite bikers stop, get off your bike trying to cool but forget to unclip your airbag, walk away and "bag" you're Michelin man" I think they solved this kind of problems. The system is only activate after a certain strength applied on the mechanical sensor... But there are other type of sensors as wireless. I never tried such systems..
both systems are for track use only, if you want it for daily riding then the airbag system from dainese would be the better as this works with gps and if you go flying it will activate it. the other ones from sidi are with the connection cord on their tanks, cost around about 60-70€ for a gas canister to be replaced...... A few of us are just dying to pull on it one day
