I'm thinking of buying an akro slip-on can. Is this likely to affect performance? does it require any additional adjustments other than the fitting? does it sound any different to the standard can? I have a 2011 blade and as you can tellf from the questions i have very little technical knowledge. Any information/experiences from you guys would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Mick

I had one on my Playboy rep .See bike thread no great performance gain, no adjustments, sounds a bit better, and in my opinion doe's not look as good as the R77 Yoshi, but look through the past threads on this subject and all is revealed .

Thanks for that - I'm taking tentative steps towards modifying my bike, not something I've ever done before so want to get it right and not waste time, money and effort.

My RR2 had one on when I bought it. It didn't feel any different normal road riding, was a bit snatchy in traffic and didn't sound a great deal different from the standard.

As I had a need to look like a good boy in front of the insurers I got the dealer to put the standard one back on. Makes the commute a bit easier and doesn't scare the cat so much.

doesn't sound like a wise investment, then. I shall consider spending my hard eraned on another aspect of modification. Kpone, I'd never have guessed you were a feline lover...

You won't get a performance increase unless you get rid of the Cat and fit a Decat pipe and silencer. It will breathe a lot better and be a lot louder unless you fit a baffle in it(dB killer), usually supplied with the silencer. You will then probably need a Power Commander to adjust your fuelling as it will be a bit more snatchy at the bottom end and run lean at the top end. If you don't wanna go the expensive zorst route , I can make you a decat pipe and a race silencer with a baffle out of stainless. Then you can spend the money you save on a PC???

Yeah, love cats. They're mean, arrogant, aloof, superior, cruel, disloyal and disrespectful.

Can't think why I enjoy their company so much...

Don't just take my word for it though, Blade, wait for one of the techies to give their opinion. I just didn't warrent the difference for the penalty of the overfuelling and my premium going up, mate.

    Yeah. What Meg's said...

I think i must have married a cat.....lol Did't realise there were so many technical implications to changing an exhaust. Meg, are you a bit of a mechanic, then?

Sounds much better over the standard can with the baffle in or out, it does increase performance slightly but we are talking a couple of bhp, mainly because the cat is removed (if you buy the race can, which hass a straight through link pipe, which is the one I have) you can also buy a fully road legal version with a cat in the link pipe if you so wish.

For the money its not an amazing mod if your looking for power but it does sound a hell of a lot better than the std setup.

Fueling should not be affected by the can (either version) as Akrapovic make the slip on cans specifically for the bike, however if you so wish you can get a PCV and a custom map done to match the can perfectly again expensive but you should get a 4-7 bhp increase with these together.

Hope this helps a little :)

I do all my own maintenance and mods mate. I make link pipes and silencers and anything else outta stainless or ally. Not got a CNC milling machine or lathe, but I can usually get stuff done. If you need help with anything , just gimme a shout. You're not far from me are ya mate?

I have an Akro can on my 2011 abs blade, it was fitted by the dealer before delivery so not sure about any power increase but IMO it looks good and sounds great when you wind it up or just pottering through the villages with the sound bouncing off the sides of the houses etc. I really like it but also agree with others that the Yoshi looks better.

    Thanks Jamie

the whole reason I wanted to start with an exhaust mod is to improve the sound quality slightly. My last bike was a standard R1 which sounded slightly more throaty at idle to 4k rpm - I'm trying to achieve something similar with the blade. Probably a bit tarty, but horses for courses. I have to admit to owning a triumph Rocket 3 with a straight-thru exhaust - awesome sound (heard for miles around!) Sounds like I have a need to be noticed???? Not apretty picture I can assure you!

I'm grateful for all the advice - you're a good bunch!

I will let you know what I do as I have a slightly grander (grandiouse?) and more expensive plan on the back burner, just not had the courage to tell (consult) the wife yet.

    Watch this space

Your welcome and thank you :)

I must admit I got the Akrapovic because I had a full system fitted to my previous bike also an R1 1999 model and the quality of the cans etc is spot on and also because I like a sports bike to sound like a sports bike not a scooter, the blade IMO is to quite as std.

I guess your not the only one who wants to be noticed :)

If I can help in any other way please feel free to ask, tbh yoshi, leo vince or Akrapovic are your three best bets

The slightly grander plan sounds very intriguing

I'm typing hoping the mrs doesnt notive. My carrent blade was only purchased in March this year - it has 1500 of extras, mostly standard extras if that makes sense - seat cowl, hugger, screen, seat etc. At the time of purchase i was torn between the one I have and a repsol. I wish I'd chosen the Repsol. I've looked at changing the bike already for a repsol and have been offered a reasonable deal, including the much publicised 'Sports Pack' I,m so tempted.....

I'd love to say that I make money with bikes, alas I always lose out. They say a fool and his money are easily parted - welcome to my world! Bikes, cars and women have cost me dearly over the years!
