Can anyone answer please, if you have any welding done to the standard blade swingarm I understand they have to strip a small area of the black coating off the swingarm for the weld to adhere, but what are the options regarding having it recoated to cover the work? Is it isolated to that area or will the whole swingarm have to be done?

It will only be a small area at the rear.

    Thanks

    Dan

Is this as a result of damage, or modifications.

To do it properly, on completion of the repair/modification you would have to have the swinging arm completely bead blasted to remove all of the black coating and then have it all powdercoated, remembering that all threaded areas would have to be capped off, or run through with a tap after the powdercoating had been done.

All off this can soon start to add up - Stripping, Repairing, Bead Blasing, Powdercoating.... etc etc.

If it's as a result of damage, it might be better off just buying a good second hand one off ebay.

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for your reply it's going to be as a result of some modification, Im hoping the company that does it will be able to take care of that for me, using Harris so I'm sure they can.

If it's a modification, then the reasons to spend a bit extra make it all worth while. I'm sure Harris's have done this many times before, following modifications, so they'll appreciate when needs doing to make it a pro job.

Because it's as a result of a modification, this makes it worthwhile, if it had been as a result of damage, then I'd have just found a replacement off ebay.

Also bearings would have to come out before powerdercoating so gets very expensive!! Same if you wanted it anodised, bearings out

I got away with not taking bearings out of my RRW swingarm. I completely removed all the grease and dust seals and then fitted big washers and a length of M8 studding to keep the powder out.

I think Honda use black anodise...not powdercoat?

You can send the arm away to get it anodised, you need to be careful who you use though.
The process involves using an acid bath to remove all the old anodise....then start again.
One of the problems with this is the acid bath will eat away a few microns of surface thickness and in some cases can cause bearing housings to become loose.
For the same reason, it's never advisable to re anodise forks more than once. (The bushes become loose)
