We're off to Spain again in april the plan is to meet up in benidorm for a stag do then head back north passing through the Pyrenees. Last time we were over there my tom tom broke almost immediately after leaving the ferry and I spent the next three weeks with a map taped to my tank. Which was more than a bit annoying when filling up and bloody dangerous in the dark on motways one night. The fact is over here I find my self using my phone(google maps) as a satnav so I haven't replaced the tom tom. This is fine except I don't fancy the data charges using it abroad. So my question is has anyone got any experience using one of the offline android satnav apps whilst in Spain a quick google search threw up navfree and tom tom.
Garmin are Top Dog nowadays, I have Navfree on my Phone and whilst good for a free Ap it's a big drain on ya phone batt so U need a permanent USB power point near ya Dash area so U can keep the Phone on charge whilst riding. Me, I only keep it as a backup, would use a proper unit all day long if poss.
I have a SIM free Sony Z1 and used that with google maps in Jakarta as sat nav to get around on a moped - worked brilliantly! Get your phone unlocked and pop in a local sim card = no mega data charges As said extra power is a possible issue, but can be solved - also RAM mount have got a brilliant unit for fixing your phone to bike - the Sony is waterproof so I have no need for a case
Thanks for the heads up, I don't see the power source any different for phone or satnav. I'll look into the mounts I was thinking of just sticking it in the top pouch of a givi tank lock that I'm getting but a bar mount would save looking down.
You'll find mounting anything in the top of a Tank Bag is too close to see! I bought a Givi Tank Lock 307 Tank Bag with the clear Tablet Holder on top with the sole intention of using an old iPad with TomTom Map Ap on for a posh Sat Nav. Put it all together and found out that my eyes when in a riding position were too close to the screen to focus at all! Complete waste of time! Ended up buying a stem mount and using a 5" TomTom mounted inside a waterproof case instead.
Have used navfree and tom tom western Europe both download to phone so jobs data charges, navfree is good as free but Tom tom is better but you pay for it
Having used a Garmin in the past I would not suggest one as I really did not like it at all. Went back to Tom tom as it's easy and simple to use. My old HTC I acquired from a friend a Map that did not use the data just the GPS chip in my phone so I was able to use it without running up my data. Not sure if you can do that now a days but what I would be looking at myself
Cheers fellas, I'll look into those. Sinewave, I think what your saying is you bought a 60" telly to go with the giant "dfs sold me a sofa so big we had to remove the front window to get it in" sofa in the 3 MTR x 3 MTR living room. Did I get that right or do you need to go to spec savers? Theres nowt worse than when you think you've come up with the ideal solution for it to not work. Am I right in saying I've seen your user name on t4/t5 forum?
No not me matey! Someone must be impersonating me! Wouldn't have a VW Van as they're far too expensive for what they are! Value for money they aint! (Sorry Dave!)
Yes it is. Just direct link it, it's easier! Fork Stem Yoke Motorcycle Bike Mount + Waterproof Case fits up to 5" TomTom One | eBay
I've got it's screwfix were I've seen the username. As for vw's being expensive I sold a T plate multivan in may for £7500. We bought it 4 years previous for £4000. The electric window went in one door and central locking in the other they were the only cost except servicing and we put 60,000 miles on it. That's the sort of expensive I like☺
"Just direct link it, it's easier!". I'll be honest I tried but I'm on a new nexus and couldn't figure out how. Your bike looks well set up. I also have a rentec rail but without the shelf on the back. I was going to get that one but mine turned up cheap shop soiled. I usually use a waterproof roll up bag strapped down but will be getting kriega bags for next year.
Yep, Screwfix was a favourite haunt of mine before the bikes took over! Hardly go there at all now, it died a death when they revamped the forum software and never recovered.
