Hey guys Just want some tips on how to get quicker at cadwell, I'm there on the 16th and I'm comfortable enough with my bike now to start trying to tie it all together. My typical lap would be from start/finish, 4th gear into coppice, back to the 3rd for charlies 1 clipping apex, then staying in 3rd and hanging out wide for charlies 2 to square it off for the park straight, down shift from 5th at 300m marker, hit brakes at 200m marker and back to 3rd for park corner, staying in 3rd and hugging the RHS of the track round to chris curve (dunno if this is right line) then swinging out a little for gooseneck, right, left, then full throttle till about half way down the slope and braking hard and back to second for mansfield (always feel like im gonna lowside here), trying to get power on and swing the line out to the curb on rhs, then back over to left and stay in second for chicane, wind 2nd nearly to redline for bottom of mountain, brake, and apex left and stay left for the mountain getting power on and getting the bike upright just before the top (making it into a big right hander sort of), hall bends is more rythm for me than anything cant really break it down into each corner, I take hairpin in 1st but should it be second? Barn in second too and always end up having loads of space left to extend the corner for the start/finish, should i take it in Any pointers from the regulars would be much appreciated. Cheers chaps!!
it's mad, i take a totally different approach to you tyke..... it seems when i do track days i try to take it in, know/think where i could be quicker and sort it out on the day......usually by watching others or seeing if i gain / loose a bit on the guy in front... couldn’t tell you what gear i do each corners and the lines etc, let alone remembering their names.... but i can visualise in my mind each track i've been to. never forget the layout etc (bar the ring) know people do take the theory / learning approach inc playing ps3 etc, studying circuit guides.... and i could read your post 1000's of times, read tips and advice but as soon as im out there cant remember anything? i like to focus on one corner, and work on that then move to the next.... on the day chatting to folk and discussing ideas / lines then trying it on track. by no means a dig mate, everyone does it different, just interesting to see others methods for improving.
LOL. I don't think I'd ever go as far to play the track on games and stuff or study guides, before I went to nurburgring all my mates said you need to learn it gran turismo, I was like naaah fuck that I'll just feel my way round like you said jimbo. I have done cadwell 5 times now mind so I do know the track, first time I went I buddied up with another guy in the novices and between sessions we were comparing notes etc. as you do, when we realised that trying to talk about a corner without knowing what its called it would be a good idea to go look at the circuit map. So after a few sessions and discussions about how we were taking the corners, both as complete noobs ofcourse, we both walked away knowing most of the names on the track. I guess I can pick things up fairly quickly, but my memory is definitely selective, ask me to remember my mums birthday or when I've got my next dissertation due in and !! Since I've been the last few times and even in inters I've not had anyone faster to follow or compete with, so I have been concentrating on nailing the racing line, braking later, and getting on the powere ASAP. Obviously I am still miles off what is possible on my 750, and the lap described in my OP is the idela scenario, I won't nail it like that everytime. But a few times on the day I will. Like you said it's about making little improvements here and there, I personally feel I can't take coppice much faster than I already do, the bike will probably do it but I don't have the cahonies to squeeze that extra bit out of it, corners like the hairpin and barn however I know I can go much faster on, I think by picking the ones where you are losing the most time and working on getting them upto the same as the ones you are already quite good at gets you going much quicker. Whereas with the pro's they're looking for milliseconds I am looking for seconds in a bend. Hoping that fast group on 16th will bring me along a lot quicker cos I'll be able to see where you can clearly go faster. When there's no one going quicker than you are its hard to take the plunge and just say f*ck it keep it pinned cos you don't know what might happen!! *fcukin essay* sorry
Tag onto some of the fast guys and follow them watch out for the guys on full slicks as they will carry lots of corner speed! My advice is get some instruction you pretty much sum it up in the first post. Don't concentrate too much on the slower corners like barn you'll make up time in the fast bits anyone going round Cadwell in 1,35 - 1.45,s are fast. The BSB boys are doing 1,27-1,30's and look how experienced and the kit they have. I don't take it too seriously if your chasing the clock you will crash eventually look at it as a bit of fun and enjoy it!
I did this with Scooby at oulton and its the best way to improve you will learn a lot by moving in to fast as I noticed an improvement on my first time in moving up, and as you said you have had no one to follow been in inters so clearly in the wrong group When BSB were at oulton in may tommy bridewell (bsb rider)had done a piece in the program and it was his take on how to do a lap of Oulton, gearing, speed etc i posted a copy of it on here in may "how to do a lap of oulton" try and get a copy of the program from when bsb were at Cadwell or search on the Internet as I guess it's a regular feature as it really gives the fans an insight on how its done.
well get a different instructer, have a chat with him and explain what it is your looking for. it's all very well people on here saying do this,do that, but without actually being on track it's very difficult to explain what to do,as they dont know what it is your doing anyway. if all else fails, pay for some 1 on 1 instruction,it'll be the best money you could spend on your bike by far.
i've done a bit of 1-2-1,and if theres an instructer there thats quicker than me then i'll grab them and go for a blast,if nothing else but to have a look at lines and see where they are quicker.
Im hopin to do all of the above by followin some lads in the fast group on 16th hope i aint the slowest like!!!
get there,go out for 1st session and get an instructer, why fuck about following someone for 1 or 2 laps when you can have someone thats there to help for the full session, then give a de-brief afterwards. go find Matt who should be running the day and tell him what you want, where your at and who will be the best instructer to take you out.if a guy called Andy sherrif is there, get him,he's v.quick and super smooth.will teach you alot. failing that, next time i'm there with you,i'll take you out,i'm not v.quick or super smooth but sure i could show you a few pointers.
the lad that owns NL isn't young.his name is Mark, but seldom see him on uk days now. Matt is the lad that runs the days at oulton usually but doesn't ride them much, and also does the hire bikes.
When i was last at oulton andy said thats the lad who owns NL and he did look fairly youngish. Hes been at almost every TD ive been on since i started. His leathers say the boy i think?
