Hi guys My bike is coming upto 16K, amazed considering I only bought it in Feb this year with 6K on it but hey ho its what its there for right! Anyway, its been given the regular oil and filter etc. but I remember my 600rr had a valve clearance done at around 16K miles. I don't mind having a go as I do quite a bit of fitting at work, just wondered if anyone had done the job before and any hints/tips or even better a how to guide if poss. Also where is the best place to get hold of shims if they require shimming? Cheers YT
Yeah I'm sure it can be left till longer dave but I don't mind a bit of tinkering and it won't do it any harm even if I just have a look I suppose, not long till NEc buddy!!
Yeah, spose if your up for it why not. Can't wait for the NEC, think that's why I ain't been sleeping much- we need a sleeps count down!
I did it on my old 929 Blade and vowed never to do it again. I had to make a special tool to hold the cam chain (I think), then there was the shimming up. I was lucky in that I had a friend with me who is a knock out mechanic, otherwise I would not have tackled it. Just one of those jobs that if it goes tits up, it is not ideal, so i personally would not like to tackle it again.
Done my own before on my R6, piece of cake if your mechanically gifted .... I used to manual for the clearences, got some feelers and started the job. I used a piece of paper and wrote everything down evreytime I measured and made a change. I'm sure there is someone here who could/would give you a hand... I would but live a little to far
Done the valve clearances on the SP1 while I had the engine out as it made it easier to gain access. Really is simple to be honest, it's just getting to them that's the hard bit.
Easy peasy job. Gotta be methodical and always turn crank in one direction to avoid camchain/tensioner problems.
did mine at about 50k miles - or rather had them done by Padgetts, not cheapest place mind, but figured they needed to be done right at that mileage. Don't expect they will need doing again - ever
The il4's are a bit easier to get access to than those on a vtwin lump but on the other hand there are more shims to check on the il4 engines. Also the tolerances don't tend to go out of spec as much as a vtwin engine.
You won't know if they are out unless you check them, I've corrected a good few at 16k, most that say they never need adjusting say so as they just don't check them! Here's a good guide. http://www.fireblader.dk/i_files/cbr1000rr/valves/valve_clearance.htm Checking them is easy ONCE you get to them, you can not remove the cover trough the top of the frame, IF Honda had given another 5mm it would be easy! Adjusting them is another matter as it's hard to see the timing marks! Enjoy
exactly and no two engines are the same, even if run on a bench side by side, same time, same day they will still be different, FAR to many factors to compare one to another.
how hard to see the timing marks? On my R6 is was a piece of pi$$, timing marks were very clear, as was the manual
