Does anyone know what insurance I take out to put a bike inside house Is it on house insurance single item to expensive I think or is it on bike insurance can you get theft only anyone out there have any info on this thanks
Before we moved to our current house with a garage I kept mine in the lounge, my insurance company asked if my house was brick built and classed it as a garage
Mine was kept in my shop. And the silly bitch on the phone asked if it were brick built?? No love I haven't got a bloody market stall!!
I don't know Graeme, but I wish someone would do full comprehensive between the beginning March and end of September then reverts to Fire or theft for October to February. The other funny thing is having a super secure purpose built garage including window and door bars, massive locks, alarm, chained down bike, front and rear disc locks etc it makes not a scrap of difference to the insurance risk or any cost reduction, it only adds pain as they then say its not insured if all the above are not in place when its parked, not even if its left unattended on the drive !. For this reason I had all the garage security and disc locks removed from the policy. Now If wanted to could shut the main doors with one poxy key lock an its covered ! Good luck and I will be interested to hear if anyone has an answer to your question.
Being as you need normal insurance to actually ride the thing on the road why would you need anything diff just because you store it in the house? Bog standard Fully Comp will suffice. No Insurance Co is guna complain if you store your bike more securely than they stipulate are they?
Just a thought that never crossed my mind while mine was indoors- mine was insured through a bike insurer but I never thought of checking with my house insurance if they were happy with it? I mean its full of flamible fluid etc could they fight a potential claim for contents/buildings by claiming things wouldn't of been as bad without a tank of fuel etc etc?
From what I'm led to understand, a bike in the house won't be covered by the bike insurance if you've stated locked garage etc and motor vehicle insurers won't supply cover for a bike stored in a house as it's deemed less secure than a garage, after all how many have a ground anchor indoors for example. House contents also will be difficult to put it on too as has been said, £15k new bike single item in a fairly insecure building. I did hear of a local guy who spent his life savings on a Ducati..dunno which one... Anyway on his first ride out someone in a car caused him to take evasive action and as a result he low sided it..only minor fairing damage. This he got repaired and the bike was back to showroom condition, but he decided that once was enough and the bike was going to be his future investment and not ride it again. He cancelled the bike insurance and tried to put it on the house cover but they declined it on the grounds of the house not being secure enough, ie: someone sledgehammers the front/back door wheels the bike away fairly easily as it's obviously going to be on the ground floor. His answer was, he dismantled the bike, and reassembled it in an upstairs bedroom, the house insurers then agreed cover, as to steal the bike would mean that it would have to be dismantled to get it out, which they considered enough of a deterrent and as such, secure..
Would've been cheaper just to remove a bedroom window and have the bike slid in with a JCB Loadall etc
Good question this Graeme, I asked my insurers recently about dropping my comp insurance and reducing it to essentially 'ornament in the garage never ridden' as I had a job offer abroad, they gave me a quote and it was £65 a year dearer than 1000 miles per year fully comp. I suppose you will have to declare it to the insurers but I am sure they don't say the word 'Garage', they just mention locked in a brick building?
If a Ground Anchor is not stipulated then I fail to see how storage in a House could be deemed less secure than a typical Garage? Thousands of Garages use manual 'up n over' doors which offer as much protection as a Garden shed!
Very good point Martin. I personally would check with the contents and building insurers that it would not affect those insurances. An empty/part empty tank is full of vapours and could easily contribute to the damage caused by a fire should it become involved. My insurers will not cover me for theft if I do not have my disc lock fitted whilst the bike is parked on my drive. So if I take it out of my bike garage I am supposed to keep the disc lock on until I either put it away again or actually get on it to ride.
