An old friend swung by my house earlier... on seeing my bike storage setup, he did the sharp intake of breath thing and exclaimed that I'm going to have a wrecked front tyre come the spring. You see, although I have the rear on a paddock stand, the front is on the ground, albeit on a couple of layers of carpet to insulate from the concrete. I've always stored it this way, and never had (or never noticed) a problem come spring. Does anyone think this is a potential problem?
If your worried over inflate it a touch and rotate every few weeks, it'll be fine. Just remember to drop the pressure before putting back on the road.
Parked mine in the garage from my last ride in early November and that's where it'll stay on the sidestand 'til next March. Never had any issues with tyres in over 30 years of biking.
Me old bike sat outside in all weathers for 4 yrs n sum times upto couple weeks before riding, never had an issue. As mrB says, move the bike around once a week and make sure u dont end up on the same bit of tyre when bike comes to a rest, a chalk mark on side wall of tyre is good indication
Long periods of storage can lead to slight deformities in the tyre but these periods do need to be long and in general our winter lay offs (for those that do) are not long enough to cause any damage. Moving a Bike around periodically (monthly is ample) is enough to combat this or if ya anal like me invest in paddock stands, front & rear, or a Bike lift which will enable U to park up and 'forget' till next season.
Yeah, it did sound alarmist... perhaps it was a worry back in his biking days (some 20 years ago!), but not such a concern these days. I suppose the alternative would be to man-up, and actually ride the thing.....................
I have mine on an Abba stand and a front headstock stand, so over winter both my front and rear suspension are totally uncompressed and of course the tyres are off the ground. I had heard that tyres can get flat spots if on a hard/cold concrete floor for a long period.
Hey Hudson, me & Jase are at KAIS this saturday having Ohlins Sussies fitted to the Trackers! Pop down if ya can?
It's just catching up on its stories! It's just like both my nephew and my wee gran they both sit in such a way that blocks everyone else's view of the telly too!
