The winter has not been kind to certain parts of my bike. As an all year round biker commuting 1000 miles a month one of the reasons I got a Honda was the fact that its built better than the others. There are a few parts however that have not stood up to the British winter and salt corrosion has occurred around the front brakes (caliper banjo's, caliper mount bolts, pins, brake line fittings etc). So I want to give it a 'freshen up' and fancy a nice set of HEL stainless braided lines. However I'm not sure of how it works with the ABS system. HEL have a 'ABS Kit' for a whopping £270 (it includes 10 lines). Or I guess I could just do the line to the calipers and the rear, saving about £100 if I dont do all the lines. Questions: Anyone done this mod on an ABS bike? Does it interfere with the ABS calculations (ECU must have some tolerences for OEM lines expanding) Is the ABS system a pain to bleed? Anything else to know or is it just too much hassle?!
Before you order any i will make some enquiries as there is a guy on the gixerjunkies forum that will do them cheaper than most, will pm him now and see if he wouldn't mind his details being put up on here. Viper_Biker as well as a few others on here will probably already know who i mean.
Right guys i got a reply from Jonny with regards to the HEL lines for the ABS Blade. Hi Si, The Honda ABS/CBS systems are quite complex. It's not just the case of ten lines fella, there are different types of splitters, t-pieces and take-offs. These are needed in order to make the ABS system work. With the ABS bikes, there isn't anything you can do but replicate the standard layout. The lines are a linked system which means that you can't simply replace the front lines. We have done a few of the blades and it's definately a noticeable upgrade. The retail price is £296 inc VAT. Our best price would be £255 inc VAT. Cheers T Hope this helps chaps, what i will say is that he offered very reasonable rates on HEL lines for my R1 probably about £20 cheaper than retail and if any of you non abs guys wanted some made up i am sure he could do some kind of deal (will be cheaper than retail for sure).
Go direct to HEL to buy. Tell them you have an ACU licence or ask for a race discount and they will do 25% off. Next day delivery and I think they're miles better than goodridge who I would never deal with again.
The problem with the ABS bike is it will need a complete rebleed. This is something I would not attempt and would likely need to be done through a Honda dealer (there are specific routines and combinations to follow with the ABS rebleed). When I enquired the 'book' time for a full ABS rebleed is something like 5 hours!! Not sure how accurate that was though.
well that wont be a cheap upgrade then....... I would be tempted to leave it Rob see what the new model brings out.
thats what i thought but then he posted this thread......or is this thread older than his current bike?
thx for that mr at least i no now!! i would defo do this at some point but now i no the cost and work involved! the main things come first
Thanks will keep an eye on them. Will have to try and get some information on fitting & bleeding, not paying dealer prices if it takes hours & hours but don't want to invalidate the warranty.....expect Honda keep information on the ABS close to there chest? See what I can find Would be nice to work out how to turn it off could be handy for summer trackdays etc
Well i got me pipes today look mint just need some dot5.1 now then its fitting time should be done some time this week I will post let you lot know how easy/hard this is ie fitting and bleeding
have fun have plenty of clean water and kitchen roll close by in case you spill any brake fluid as it wrecks paint
