I'd like some thing bright but have no idea how powerful lights are. Saw a spotlight in lidl and it was £9.99 but couldn't see that being enough for the patio area Help please which light
Depends how you are planning to control it? Will it be switched on via a manual switch and left on for a few hours whilst a BBQ goes on or do you want a PIR controlled security light?
BBQ switch idea mate yes. Iv got a security light already but it's jus light in garden in real direction or good light
Best type of light for prolonged use which is cheap to run and will light up a fair sized Patio is a 70w Metal Halide Flood, they cost around £40-60 depending on brand. This sort of thing! 70w Metal Halide Exterior Floodlight - IP65
Mate thanks excellent thanks very much. Will one do or do I need two. Patio is 14 ft by 14 Thanks again
The trouble with lights designed for PIR operations is they tend to run much higher wattages for the same LUX output (That's brightness to Joe Public) Discharge lighting (SONS and Metal Halide) require a short warm up period before achieving full brightness so are not suited to quick 'on-off's' via a PIR sensor. A 70w Metal Halide Flood will out 'LUX' a 500w PIR all day long and cost rucks less to run over a 5-6 Hr BBQ
only problem with MH is if you are going to have it on and off a few times a night its going to eat the electric like its going out of fashion lol.
I have a PIR flood light. Cost me about £50 and is LED? Which I would suggest. Costs so much less to run, gives loads of light and bright enough for a large area. I found out much about LED lights over the past year as I have been changing many of my house legs to LED as well as my works. If you get the right wattage it will cost u a little more but the benefits are a life of 15-25 years per led and using very little power.
Remel you are bang on the money there. I do the. Marine fish and run two 250w MH lights over the main tank and one 150w MH over the sump. So I and others have run many tests of start up costs and running costs and Figure the average weekly cost is about £15.but now the technology behind Cree LEDs has come on leaps and bounds and you can now get I slimline Unit that will produce the same lux with as much penetration power as the MH But costing just £5 per week.now when they first arrived the average cost was 1000 a light but now partially thanks to China the cost of these units has come Down to 350.

If you go for MH, Son, Tungsten etc. with the cast sh*t metal black finish I recommend you change the enclosure screws for stainless or at least use plenty of copper slip on the threads. Other wise you'll never get the bloody thing apart to replace the lamp.
