Chain and sprocket options

    Guys, I have used the search function and read some interesting things but this is still a little bit confusing.

    I am wanting to go -1 +2 with my sprockets for increased acceleration. I'm guessing this will require a slightly longer chain? Does anyone know what length? I keep reading about 530 pitch and changing to a 520 pitch, I don't even know what that means!!

    Lastly I have searched all the usual places for chain and sprocket kits but cannot find a kit that has the sprockets i want with the right chain.

    any help is much appreciated.

    Hi

    I think a 520 and a 530 have the same pitch measurement but the 530 is approx 3mm wider than the 520.

    So a 530 is more durable than a 520 but a 520 will be lighter.

    On my roadbikes i've just kept the standard size. I think racers switch to 520 as they save a bit of weight and less mass to accelerate etc.

    When i've changed sproket sizes in the past i've bought the chain and sprokets separately (my mate has a trade account with B&C Express so it wasn't anymore expensive than a kit, but not sure if a kit is cheaper normally). On my ZX-7R I got away with standard chain length when i went up two teeth on the back and down one on the front (killed the top speed and makes it drink more juice if you have to do any motorway riding as you'll be pulling more revs for a given speed).

    Not changed anything on my blade yet so not sure if you need a longer chain.

    Think a blade is 116 links as standard, but most 520 race chains have 120 so you might have to go up a few.

    Hopefully someone whos changed theirs will come along with an answer. I'll have a look at mine tonight and see what its got on it (sprocket sizes chain length etc), not had it long so not sure what size its got on it.

    Thanks mate that helps a lot, i thought the 520/530 was chain length not width.

    I think i may try a -1f and leave everything else the same. At the moment its my road and track bike until i buy a new road bike in the summer so I think i'll wait to mess with these bits until its 100% track bike.

    I think the pitch is the distance between two pins/rollers.

    According to the chart below 520, 525, 530 all have the same pitch but different widths.

    Ive just ordered a front and rear PBR sprocket set and a 3D Chain.

    Stuck to standard gearing as I am more than happy with how it rides.

    Sorry dude, I've got too much junk in the garage to get it on a stand.

    It's a 16 front and 44 rear, looks like it's still a 530, but can't count the number of links properly at the mo.

    If no one else answers I'll move it out at the weekend and let you know.

    No don't go to any trouble mate, so you have a larger sprocket on the rear already?

    I just recently picked up a 45t supersprox rear and have a tsubaki chain and 15t renthal front to order from sportsbikeshop.com (cheapest place i have found).

    Think getting it fitted locally is around £40.

    yeah think 16 front is standard but the previous owner went up two on the back to 44.

    Only got it at the end of last year so can't tell you what it goes like yet. :)

    Actually i must have got a 43t if 42 is standard? It was 1t extra.

    So if i go -1f & +2r can i still use my standard chain? If so then that's what I'm gonna do, i think that with a QAT will transform the bike.

    Thanks mate, the first one is brilliant, I'll measure at the weekend, my bikes in the shop so I cant measure anything yet.

    If I estimate the length correctly from sprocket to sprocket at 23" then i wont need to change the chain length.

    Standard chain should be ok for -1+2. It might shorten the wheelbase a tad but no more than a new chain would.

    That's really interesting guys. Does the revised gearing work with or in addition to a qat?

    If I were you I would be doing it one thing at a time. Change the gearing and then, when you're used to the change, do the QAT. I changed the gearing and put a motion pro QAT at the same time. I struggled with it To begin with and ended up running the smallest reel in the throttle for a while until I got a feel for it.
